Having given up trying to get my Samsung BR player to handshake via HDMI to my Onkyo amp I have gone down the RCA route.

I'm no expert on this but bought

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350224464111&_trksid=p2759.l1259#ht_1075wt_908

from Ebay and thought that by connecting them from my DVD player to the amp then all would be fine.

Well the picture is there but no sound. Do I need another cable for sound? There is an optical output on the player and receiving port on the amp...or should that lead be giving me sound as well as vision?

The lead you've got should give you both sound and vision but as its only a composite and stereo lead, i'm sure you know you will not be getting the best picture possible let alone any HD sound.

What settings have you got set on your blu ray and amp?

What problems are you having with the hdmi, someone on here maybe able to help you - model numbers would be handy aswell

Oh and welcome to the forums

Thanks its an Onkyo TX-SR606 amp and a Samsung BD-P1400.

The HDMI link between them worked for a few months then becme erratic now there is no handshake at all.

My mother in law did press a lot of buttons one time trying to get the TV to work, so I figured she may have messed with the settings, but researching the Onkyo it does seem very susceptible to HDMI failure, it just doesn't seem to be acknowledging any signal from the player. The DVD player hooks up to the TV (also Samsung) no problem, but going through the amp = no go.

So I thought lets bypass HDMI and just use the composite cable in the Ebay link above, as I say pic is fine but no sound. Looking in the user manual it seems to suggest that in conjunction to the 3 cable RCA I should have a 2 cable audio lead also plugged in?

I've heard that about the 606 the hdmi internal card thingy apparently goes dead but i haven't experienced it myself had mine for over 2 yrs now with no problems, but mine's off to a new home tomorrow !

Here's my setting which may be of some use to you,

I have my blu ray plugged into hdmi 1 on the back of the receiver, in the receiver set up menu under "input assign" dvd is set to hdmi 1 so they match.
In "hardware" hdmi is set to "through"
If no joy it may be worth plugging into hdmi port 2, 3 then 4 and changing the hdmi number
in the "input assign" menu accordingly just incase you have a dead socket(s).

Hope this helps.

Have you got any other sources plugged into the amp with hdmi's?

if these suggestions don't help. plug the player direct into the tv via hdmi for video. connect the player to the amp via optical for sound. you will only get DD or DTS 5.1 but this method will be worlds better than using analogue via the rca cable.

(you may have to change the settings on the player to output sound via optical not hdmi)

Silly question: How old is the Onkyo? Just that Onkyo's usual warranty length is 2 years, and if the HDMI input is broken, then you could get it repaired under warranty. Might be worth talking to your dealer...

Also silly question, but you are using the cable for composite video and stereo analogue audio - ie to/from yellow, red and black (or white) sockets, rather than red/blue/green, aren't you?

If you're using red/blue/green you're connecting component video, not composite video and stereo audio. Component video doesn't carry any audio, and will also require the use of a stereo analogue or digital audio cable.

Frankly, given the mother in law buttons scenario I think I'd do a factory reset on the Onkyo if you suspect settings are messed up, then try the HDMI again.

Good point AE - and one your dealer / Onkyo will probably recommend you try, before anything else...

Ahh! think you may have hit the proverbial nail there....I hope my colour blindness can compensate for my ignorance...I have ordered an optical lead so will try in conjunction with my red blue and greens, and then also try going direct to the tv which I know works and then the optical via the amp.

Thanks to all others for their advice, the amp is just past 2 years, all the hdmi slots work with my Humax but fail to recognize (sometimes fleetingly) the dvd player.
