Question of speaker supports

What are the benefits of standing speakers on slate or similar material. I used to just place my old RS6s - with spikes - on the carpet. Below the carpet there is underlay and cork tiling. Although very firm and stable, would placing any future speakers on a solid foundation really benefit the sound?

Anyone have any pointers? I've never had the opportunity to compare and test the difference. Even at dealers they just stand the speakers on carpet...

Not really, as the slate will still be 'floating' on the carpet. Best bet is spikes through the carpet/underlay/cork tiling into the floor below.

Cheers Andrew - when I met up with Gerrard last week he has the RS6s on a solid foundation, so just trying to work out what influence that has on sound.
