Question for Clare

I know you were / are a fan of the denon bt2500 and stated on a thread in the past that the sound could really show off what the big onk was capable of. As you may remember i tested one quite a while ago but sent it back due to it being painful to use, but I was very impressed with both picture and especially the sound over the panasonic bd35. My question is: Is the sony 760 as good / better than the denon bt2500 in these respects?

This came up in the ( interminable) Oppo thread yesterday, actually. The Denon outpmuscles the Sony for sonic performance over HDMI, which you'd expect for a product launched at more than twice the price! Closer on picture, but the Denon just edges it, particularly with DVD. Again, to be expected.

If you can live with the Denon's achingly slow load times and lack of Profile 2.0 spec (plus its transport-only limitations), wi-fi etc, it's a corking buy at @£499. Don't know how much longer stocks will last, though - I have posed that question to Denon.

The new Denon DBP-2010 (£600) is reviewed in the Awards issue, but it's not strictly speaking the '2500BT's replacement, as it's a full-spec player, rather than transport (plus the '2500BT lives on, technically above it in the range - even though you can buy it for less!).

Can you explain the difference between a transport and a player. I know that one is not a lorry and the other a media player, but I didn't realise there was a difference.

What are the advantages of a transport over a player?

Hi. You need an amp with the 2500 as it does no onboard decoding at all. All it has on the back is one HDMI socket. No analogue outs etc. According to Denon, it's so you can have a better player for cheaper i.e save money on all the stuff you don't need or use and just have a player that bitstreams a quality signal. Personally, I love it (I hope Will's not reading this!)

Thanks for that Davo, makes sense seing as most newer amp's have the capacity to do all that themselves.

Having seen the Denon DVD-2500BT and the pioneer bdp-lx71 together I would suggest you look at the pioneer bdp-lx71.

The picture and sound superior on the pioneer bdp-lx71.

The Denon at £500.00 is a rip off, because the pictures are to inconsistant at being good.

Although the sound is good on the Denon.

gel, as you seem to deem every other player on the planet unworthy to the (excellent in its time; since superceded) Pioneer '71, what are you going to do when the last few stocks run out?

Differing opinions. I feel the other way.

This is where you will benefit from looking round other sites and getting a hatful of expert opinions - or ultimately compare them in your local store as they should both be readily available.

Whereas I concede that without a decent amp the Denon is a very expensive door stop, I disagree that the picture is inconsistent. Particularly with DVD upscaling, in my opinion, the Denon blew the Pioneer away. Smashed it. This was (and still is) the main issue for me for now and in the future until my Blu Ray library catches up with my DVD library (in about 70 years)

Still, as I own one, I'm always going to be biased (as I suspect Gel is) so read around the other sites....

Well hopefully some people will test at the remaining few and get themselves a bargain, which is all I am trying to point out to people.

Because the pioneer bdp-lx71 "smashes" the denon in blu ray pictures, no comparison.

When it does run out of stocks I will certainly be glad I got one, because now a days you are going to have to spend a lot more money to buy a better one.

Well I have just had a look at a S760 and whilst the BD proformance did look very good I could not help but feel the player was rather plastic and lightweight. Maybe I have got used to tank like build quailty in my Donon DVD3930 but I for one did not feel this player would be a worthy replacement to my curent Denon3930/PS3 set up.

Maybe I should save some more and look at the S5000es???

I'm not surprised though...wasn't the 3930 about 900 pounds in it's day? The S760 is a mid to budget machine at 400 pounds? I suspect that if you want that level of build quality you might have to spend some big money

I got my Denon for £500 ex-demo and a bargain it was! but it does make it really had to replace as I dont really fancy explaining to the Wife a grand vanishing from the bank account

which was why I considered the S760.

Well, there's the Sony BDP-S5000ES, for a start - not hard to find for the right side of a grand. But that would be 'better than' rather than 'the equal of'...

Well if it's tank-like build quality as well as superb BD/DVD performance, the Denon DVD-2500BT still rocks (even if gel disagrees, as it hasn't got a vintage Pioneer badge on) and is widely available for £499. It is, of course, just a transport though, and not Profile 2.0 - if either of those issues matter.
