If you can stretch your budget to 1400£ you can get the wonderful Anthony Gallo Strada, you can hang them on the wall orput them on a shelf and the sound quality will stay the same.
How about the Dali Mentor Menuets? I know they're rear ported, but Dali themselves recommend shelf mounting, or at least wall mounting. They're positively tiny as well, only 25cm high and 15cm wide, and have a sound that completely defies their size. They're "only" £895 too, so a bit of cash left over for booze and books and stuff.
