ps3 overheated (Help needed)

The problem we have is my sons ps3 has over heated and the red light keeps flashing and will not eject the film.He has phoned sony helpline only to be told the warranty is out and he can get a replacement for £128 part ex.

I really wanted to know if any of the tecnical minded people have any fixes for this problem, thank you.

Apparently, this book tells you how to fix it. Not sure how difficult it is to do though.
