Hi!

I'm thinking to upgrade my system with a pair of new speakers. My system : Primare I30, Primare CD 30, Kimber 8TC, Kimber SS and B&W 704. I was thinking about PMC OB1i or ProAC D28. I listen all kind of music, from Led Zeppelin to Miles Davis. If somebody has any other idea I would be greatful.

Thanks!

Hi Junior D

You should also consider ATC's SCM40 speakers. The ATC's will be a significant upgrade over the B&W's and work will work really well with your Primare electronics.

Listen to them both at the dealer. Buy the one that makes you drool. If they both do, get the cheaper one. If neither does, wrong speakers...at that price if you don't leave the dealer ready to sell your kids to buy a pair, keep looking.

Perhaps my speaker listening experience may be of some help. Can't comment on the Proacs as I haven't heard them.

I set out to find a speaker that would suit both the Premaire i30 and of course my ideal sound.

My dealer firstly set up the ATC40 which was a pleasing sound but I was not sure how it would be after a long listening session, so moved to the PMC FB1. Pleasant and did what was expected but didnt hit the button! So was about to leave when I saw the Sonus Faber Tower and the PMC OB1 lurking in the corner. Couldn't leave without auditioning them even though they were out of my price bracket. Both were streets ahead in overall sound production but as the Sonus Faber was back ported I had to dimiss them. Then the OB1 was set up. It took both me and my son about 5 minutes of listening to different CDs to make up our minds. These speakers did everything I was hoping (listening) for and the rest is history. See my sig.

I haven't tried to put sound into words as they mean different things to different people but when I heard these speakes for the first time they made my heart beat a little faster!

I have had them now for 3 months and still I have to put on a CD as I pass just confirm I made the right decission. I did!

There is a thread "Loan of PMC OB1 but.." if you search my forum name.

Hope this helps but of course for this sort of money you have some great choices. A good demo is vital.

Thank you very much Oakman!

I'm going in the same directon, and my first impression of OB1 was also very powerful. I listened them at the dealers demo room with a Bryston amp and I was thrilled. Sound was something from another dimension, treble was sweet and detiled, while bass was hmmm.... well you know what I am talking about. I have an offer from the dealer to get one ex demo pair for aroun 2800 pounds. What do you think about that?

Hi Junior

We have quite an extensive range of loudspeakers in the price point you're looking at, and we do numerous A/B demos of these on a weekly basis (a list of which you'll find via my Bio).

Our most popular speakers in this price point, as chosen by our customers, tends to be either the ProAc D28's, the PMC OB1i's, and the KEF Reference 203/2's, all for different reasons. Obviously choosing a loudspeaker is a personal thing, so a side by side demo on the same system is highly recommended.

The 203/2's are usually chosen for their clean presentation, and their dynamic ability in the mid/high frequency range, which seems to leave many speakers standing in this regard.

The OB1i's have a slightly warmer sound to them, but still retain treble detail, which is very delicate sounding, not forced.

The D28's are the warmest sounding of the three, and the sweetest sounding too. I think people choose these because they're just such an enjoyable listen - nothing technical, niothing precise, just extremely listenable. pretty decent bass too for a two way speaker!

Because of our range, most people do try other speakers out like the Monitor Audio PL200's and Spendor A9's, but we find most choose one of the above three (although the Spendor is a new model, so that might stir things up a little). I think because of your diverse ranges of music, one of those three will definitely suit you.

If I were you, I'd hear them with Primare amplification. Bryston is quite a different kettle of fish, and will make the speakers you hear much better than the primare will. PMC are made to compliment Bryston, and I feel the KEF Reference are a perfect match too, but put these speakers on another amp and the results will be different.

Yes I think we both had a similar experience. 'Thrilled' was the word.

You may want to listen with your Primare i30 just to confirm what you heard as the Bryston is a great amp and would partner well.

I find the bass just right but to keep it in check I have put them on good granite plinths.

Be aware that you will need 2 sets of quality jumper cables if you go with the PMC as they have 3 sets of terminals on each speaker.

For that money and if all your listening sessions are good, then its a good buy.

What part of the country are you?

Thank you for your advice!

Now the only thing I have to do is to explain my girlfriend that PMC's are 'must have' in our new house ,beacause they are gonig to improve our life in a way that she can not imagine. 🙂

By the way I'm not from the UK, I'm from Croatia.
