Yes, I know Silver cuts it down but I have got Cambridge Audio kit and want to upgrade my CA 540R version 1. I hope a 640R upgrade or 740R may be out soon.

Any help much appreciated.

A number of us have opted for the Yamaha RX-V3800 (only available in silver) ÿ- maybe not the best scaling, but if you don't need it, superb sound. ÿThis originally retailed at something like £1400. ÿHiFix still have a few at £749.99 (according to their website). ÿI am thrilled with mine and it definitely merits checking out alongside the end of the line Onkyos and Denons, rather than opting for lower-spec new models.

Don't forget the ubiquitous Onkyo TX-SR875 or the TX-NR905. I can personally vouch for the 875 being a damn fine amp.

I think it depends what's more important for you music (tv+stereo) or picture? I find CA AV receivers lacking the picture options if you compare them to Denon 1909 for example.. Regarding the music, I've never compared CA with others so don't know although I think if you care about stereo you should have separate stereo amp for that and this is where CA 740/840 would be very good choice.

I think the best option is to buy an AV Receiver that does picture part well + has preouts so you can connect stereo amp if you have one or if you buy one in the future (unless you have a separate system for stereo)

But anyway answering you question. I found Pioneer LX51 interesting choice (less than 800£) because it has preouts and upscales both analog and HDMI sources. Hopefully WHF review wil come soon.

And if you don't mind the look I'm sure Onkyo 875 would be a good choice as well.

Does it upscale both analog and HDMI sources?

The Yamaha only passes through an HDMI input, but upscales analogue. ÿit uses an Anchor bay chip - supposedly better than the Faroudja, but not as good as the Reon. ÿAs I said before, it may not be the best scaler, but you're getting £1400 of sound quality for less than £800 at present. ÿIt's a pity that it was never reviewed by What Hi-Fi, but others are prepared to recommend it. ÿI believe that some of the HiFix staff have chosen it for their home set-up. ÿThe new generation of Yamaha receivers have had fantastic reviews, of course.
