Hi I bought the Panasonic today as the reviews were good and I thought it would be better than my 3 year old pioneer as things move on so quickly.

but I think the pioneer sounds better still, the picture seems slightly better but the Panasonic diffinately isn't as smooth picture wise .

Setup seems right, have tried changing a few settings but still the same. Guessing pioneer still a better overall machine ?

Any tips on sorting this or views on this would be appreciated, if it can't be sorted I guess I send it back and wait for the players to get better

Thanks

Try these things:

1) Leave Chroma unsampling on

2) Choose "standard" picture mode to ensure no artificial processing is employed. If you think the pictures are a bit soft, you can try to "sharpen" the image, but bear in mind this is artificial processing.

3) Set audio to "bitstream" so that your AV receiver does audio decoding.

For blu ray pictures, as long as the player isn't employing any artificial processing, there shouldn't be any difference between players.

The chroma setting is on , might go and buy some newer blu ray discs to test it. Any suggestions to really test these 2 players out against each other ?

If you don't want 3d then keep the 71. When playing Blurays, all players are the same. If playing DVDs, then this is different and is where you will see the difference in picture quality.

also, if your tv has been calibrated, then all the picture processing should be switched off and the tv should be doing the processing.

i only upgraded my 71 to the denon because of 3d, network functions and disk loading speed.

My Denon 3313 plays an identical picture to my 71 but my tv has been calibrated.

Hope this helps.

Why would all blu ray play back be the same picture quality ?

What about the sound ? Pioneer better as far as I can tell ?

How do I go about getting the TV calibrated then ? As what's the advantages?

Thanks

No not bluray disks are the same. All blue players when playing blue rays will output the same picture quality because it is a digital signal. If you switch on the vide processing, then you will see differences but the picture won't be as the it was intended. I would save your money and spend on calibration and then it doesn't matter. What tv do you have?

I used Vincent teoh from HDTV test to calibrate my VT and he is based in the north. A few others on the forum used other calibrators. Gel and elisdj will be able to recomend if you are down in the south.

Gel has the 71 and he had the 3313 and many other players and in terms of BD playback, I think he was in the same opinion as me and he sent the 3313 back because he doesn't get on with 3d.

The 71 is still a very good solid player, so I'd keep that if you are ok without 3d, slow loading and no network.

Cheers

Must add, I'm finding this forum impossible to use on iPad mini, mods sort it out.. I can't type half the time it freezes!!

I will not be changing my Blu-ray player again, I recently tried 4 or 5 high end ones and all were the same as my Pioneer. I still get tempted by the 91 Pioneer though and did buy it on AV Forums the other month but pulled out of the deal though. *smile*. I did phone this shop up too about the 91 too:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PIONEER-BDP-LX91-BLURAY-PLAYER-/281436937226?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_CDPlayerSeparates&hash=item4186f2dc0a

When I saw it on demo it was amazing but then again it was on the Pioneer 600a TV, but I can't see it being any better than the 71 now. Still tempting though. *smile*

Actually I think I should wait for a 4K Blu-ray player to go with my new 4K OLED TV(I wish). *smile*

Hi Gel

Before you rush to get your credit out to pre-order either of these new players may I remind you that as they are the US versions they they will be region locked to zone A so they won't play any UK zone B discs.

Just though I would warn you.

Thanks I will look into this, I just gave the 2 players another test with Avatar in 2D and still think pic is slightly better on panasonic but sound better on pioneer , seems like I have to turn up the volume when playing on panasonic to get the same effects as pioneer on a lower volume

But it's a hard one as I cant switch quickly between the 2 players

Even now I still wish the Pioneer 450 had analogue inputs. After the festive period I may look at it again with Rega or rDac. Really impressed by the Panasonic but the Pioneer had that something extra the others didn't have, although can't put my finger on what.
