If I purchase a 8th Generation 50" Plasma over 9th Generation 50" plasma I can save nearly a grand with good deals for outgoing 8th generation, is there a vast difference in picture quality I only keep hearing 9th gen is 5 times blacker, but the 8th gen was still an award winning product.

I would be wall mounting and I notice that Pioneer will have a 9th gen with seperate media box KRP-500 ( but it's pricy). Pioneer sell media box for around £250 so this still would be a good deal. What should I do?

Hello Mikeyb50. If you can believe the magazines - and I would as a rule - then the 9th are only a slight improvement on the 8th.

So do it !

The LX has the tuners etc built in. The KRP-600M is a pure monitor - no tuners, media box or anything else. The KRP-600A has a media box. As far as picture quality goes, the 9G panels are definitely an improvement on the 8G however as you will read elsewhere, the panel buzzing problem has definitely not been resolved so if this is likely to be a problem for you, take care.

I've had my KRP-600M replaced and although it is an improvement on the first one the buzzing is still not acceptable and the shop's display model was much the same. If you Google 'Pioneer 9G plasma buzz' you will quickly find I am far from the only person with this problem. I'm disappointed that no one here is talking about this particularly given that these panels are more than likely going into mid-high end home cinema systems where people are likely to be partnering them with some very nice - very quiet kit.

Can you hear the buzz over a movie?

Can you hear the buzz over a movie?

Depends on the material - watching tv generally you can only hear it during commercial breaks etc but we watched the Spiderman3 BluRay last weekend and with the sound on my Denon set to -20db (fairly average volume), I could hear it through approx 30% of the movie - not good. The oscillating varies dramatically with what is one screen - much worse with white - and of course, the volume of the soundtrack varies too. If the pitch didnt vary as much perhaps I wouldnt notice it.

Either way, its' irrelevant - for a set of this price, from 4m away, I shouldn't be able to hear anything at all from the tv. The Panasonic set the dealer brought out for comparison had no sound at all unless I stuck my head round the back and next to the vent. Another point being that I've heard 3 different sets of the same model now which have all been different. If, as Pioneer are claiming, they are all the same and its 'normal', why aren't all 3 sets the same? Its very good b.s., but its still b.s.

Pioneer sending me another one up from Melbourne next week to see if thats any different.
