Regarding picture settings, there is not a set standard as everyone has their own perception of what looks good to them against others but if you want to set up your tv to a good standard, there are two good options:

Option 1> Setting up your tv to "THX" standards, to do this you will need a DVD film such as Indiana Jones as it contains the THX OPTIMIZER test patterns that you go through setting up brightness, colour, etc. but you will need one vital piece, a pair of THX OPTIMIZER GLASSES, you will need to buy these from a online retailer but from USA as there seems to be none of these available here or even on fleabay.

Option 2> Setting up your tv to "DVE" standards (Digital Video Essentials), this is a calibration disc and you can buy this from a online retailer, it come's with full step by step instructions to set up the picture on a tv to a high standard while playing the dvd that contains the test sequence and its very similar to the THX way, as in you set the brightness, colour, etc. everything you require to complete the set up is supplied with the dvd.

If you want to get set up straight away or as soon as possible, then probably the DVE disc will be the one as you can get this quicker to your door, where as the THX way, you will have to order glasses from abroad which will take some time.
