The Pioneer PDP 508XD looks great, but I've decided to save £2000+ and get a more affordable set for the interim whilst I come to terms with needing to chase in the speaker cables (or decent wireless rare speakers come to the market). So I am considering the Panasonic TH-50PX70 and the Samsung PS50Q97HD. Both are only HD-Ready but also under £850. Which would you recommend for watching sport and movies (no gaming intended) and what would be a good 2.1 adio add-on?

Hello Richard

Although I own neither of these sets (yet) I have been having the same dilemma! I have literally driven myself insane over the last few weeks looking at reviews etc and all my research has pointed to the Panasonic, so that is what I am going to go for! But like I say that is my own conclusion which I have drawn from lots of research, someone else will probably tell you otherwise! I have seen both sets side by side in Comet running the same HD source and I thought the Panny to be a better picture although I know this is not a foolproof way of comparing the sets! Also the Panny has the supposedly better SD picture!! Where have you seen them for under £850? I could've purchased the Panny for £809 just over a week ago but since then everywhere seems to have put the price up by at least £100!!

Hi Jimbo77

I think Amazon has the TH50PX70 for £849.

What are you doing for audio? Do you have a 5.1 system or relying on the TV speakers? I am thinking about the Denon DHT-FS3. Any advice, anone?

I have decided to go for the TH-50PX70 (but may go for the Full HD PZ70 if I can get a good deal). Now for the audio. Which is better, the Bose 3.2.1 GS or the Denon DHT-FS3?

Someone with sense I dare say..........Good on you....save yourself £2K and as I am biased already owning the PS42Q97HD I would say go for the PS50Q97HD Being only HD ready is by no means a shortcoming on either of these TV's Watching HD in 720p should prove a real treat though even SD and normal DVD vieweing is also marvellous especially on the Samsung

you made the right choice with the panasonic, id say it beats the samsung especially on SD quality, also for the speakers im not such a fan of Bose but find a store that has both setup and bring your own CD and have a listen 🙂

Hi, Well just to let you know that I purchased Both the Panny 50 and the Denon dht-fs3 some 6 weeks ago and have not been disappointed. You have to of course set them up properly to suit your own environement and when you do , you will not regret it.

Now I on the other hand would go for the Samsung as it offers a slightly sharper image over the Panny and has a better grip on detail. At the end of the day it all comes down to the individual and what you prefer the look of, but a glance of the 2 sets side by side on the local Comet shop floor is not where to judge the sets proformance.

Either way they are both great Plasma sets and offer super VFM but I do also feel the the Samsung is a much more pleasing design on the eye.

Hi D.J. Now look I think its a Krime that you own so much gear. Are you single or what? If I were to even think of getting half the gear you have my other half would cut off my private parts.Other than that we agree except I still think Panasonic RULES OK.

Nope happily Married with kids

By the way the stuff I have listed is only the stuff in the Lounge otherwise the list would be massive.
