I brought a Philips 42PFL9664 over the weekend on the back of some rather amazing reviews.

However when playing PS3 games (MW2 mainly) I am experiencing small amount of input lag and various pixilation/blockiness effects on screen.

Could the gamers out there please post the settings you use for optimum PS3 gaming performance?

I have set the TV to game mode which virtually reduces most input lag and have tweaked various other settings, Tint to Normal, Sharpness to 5 (This has alleviated a lot of the blockiness but I’m sure there are other settings I can tweak) but I’m sure there are many other settings you experts can recommend I adjust as I am quite new to all this so any advice/tips/hints would be hugely appreciated!

Many thanks in advance!

P.S Apologies in advance if this has already been covered in a previous thread but I am unable to find any information to help me with my problem!

The Philips TV you have adopts an LCD panel with a ultra low response time compared to even the Samsungs and Sonys. But I struggle, as you post alludes, on how great they [Philips] are when gaming is the sole evaluative criterion in choosing a TV. I don't personally rate the Philips on the top of my list for a TV dedicated for gaming.I'll put Samsung higher on the list.

The gaming signals going to the TV should be 'unprocessed' so if you switch off ALL the process modes lest the Brightness, Contrast settings the problem might go away.

My own experience with an XBOX 360 even on a Component input on a Sony shows none of those problems you have reported.

I have the 47 " pfl9664 which i presume have all the same setting. You,ve got to have it on GAME in the picture setting ONLY. all other settings lagg ever so slightly a mil of a second which results in you being dead from a curving bullet on call of duty .beleive me i play every day[SAD LIFE I KNOW IM ONLY 36 "AVINIT"] The GAME pic setting still gives great detail and sharpness so you will be back on killing spree in no time HAPPY HEADSHOT

Response time and LAG time are 2 entirely different things

All modern tvs have a very low response time (Usually the time taken for a black pixel to turn white and back to black again)]

LAG time is the time taken between receiving a signal and actually dislaying it onscreen

As said above, GAME mode should have the lowest lag time

Hi,

PS3 Gamers.

I have the Philips 42PFL7404 got it working like a dream. Had Philips previous, basics all the same.

If you ever get the opportunity to set up the display using a 'Digital Video Essentials' disc you will see that the sharpness is too high even on 5.Betting this is the same for the 9664. When calibrating using the disc,'Sharpness' even on no.1 causes 'blurring' around the edges of writing and no.s on the test page. Guess you could test this a little using a text page from a disc. Have mine set to '0' for all sources. Worth mentioning that using sharpness is adding to what is already there, its not necessary. However, the 'Advanced Sharpness' option works great with Blu-Ray ( with set sharpness set to zero).

Also, calibrate all pictures with processing turned off especially contrast. Also, i turned off the backlight as this causes motion issues with BD and game playback on my 42PFL7404, works great for Sky though. A good way to see if all is correct is to look at the 'loading screen' on MW or MW2. The one with the level picture on.The screen should be clean with perfect contrast between the background and sky, with clear edges and good depth. In fact if you alter any settings here you will see the effect on the picture in real time.

You can always try adding other processing from here. Have used HDNM on occasion depending on title.

I use a £5 HDMI cable for my PS3 ( Alba from Argos). I have a Chord Supershield, but the Supershield makes the image blurry for some reason. The Supershield again works great with Sky though. Use a cheap cable for my Panny Blu-Ray player too after trying the Supershield. Hope WHF try multiple cables if they ever review this, have no idea why so different.

Regards the Sony point, please bear in mind that you are using a 17bit panel (great) whilst Sony have reverted back to (8 bits for the W5500's = cheaper), less 'bits' than the W4500 models. In other words yours is great. I use a 15ms time on my Panasonic projector and don't have any issues playing Wipeout HD, looks fantastic!

Lastly, remember some games are 720p with the PS3 outputting at 1080p so scaling may/will effect things sometimes.

Interested to see how you get on with this. Try the stuff above with a Blu-Ray player too. You should see a big improvement in image clarity.

Everything off + Basic Calibration + No added Sharpness + decent connection = Great image.

Kind Regards,

Damn,

After all that forgot to say. My Philips took about 3 weeks to break in properly. Lost noise, motion improved and blurred edges settled down. Had a Philips CRT a few years back that was the same. Thought it was broken to start with was going to take it back.

Patience.
