Sorry but 'stick it on optical' is amplifier dependant.
No it isn't, if you want DD from sky you MUST use optical (or coax). That's the only point I'm answering, exactly how you do it on any given amplifier is a different question and not, as far as I can tell, what gsb was asking.

That's not what i'm asking at all??

I know how to get DD from sky.

I simply wanted to know if others prefere their avr's dsp over DD.My mistake,i should have asked about this particular avr.For example,is DD any better than the sci-fi setting on the avr and so on.

Robin kindly pointed out that i may have my set-up wrong, which having looked i havn't.

The reason i'm getting DD EX i have discovered is becouse i have the extended suround on the avr switched to auto, which has picked up the DD EX flag.....i hadn't noticed this before the olympics.

LHC,even tho i'm gratefull for your opinion i must ask are you trying to be a type of cyber bully or just an *rse-hole... i enjoy reading your rant's when someone pulls ya chain as often they make me laugh but in this case i suggest you think about what i am asking instead of presuming,if you wish to coment.

All the best and that

hi guys  , just to add in if your AVR is set to...

Auto - then it will automatically choose HDMI if opt or Coax is not plugged in

If opt or Coax is plugged in then normally the AVR will take The Digital Signals into action (i.e It will use the Optical or Coax)

U can manually choose which one you want tho... 8)

^This is what most AVR do. ...

Also HD channels (e.g BBC HD) only broadcast in Dolby Digital (DD) So the amp refrshes the audio signal and displays a {DD} sign somewhere on the AVR

Now the [EX] that you see on youre AVR is Basically - Dolby Digital EX. which is normal Dolby digital with and extra speaker (basicallly it creates 6.1 or 7.1 channel effect (normal DD is 5.1))

^its also similar to Dolby Pro-Logic

So id say you stick to DD as thats it was BBC HD broadcasts out, so your amp will decode it as its suppose to

you dont want to create what u call matrix effect....thats adding channels that you dont have .i.e making 7.1 when you only have 5.1

hope i helped and cleared it up 8) 8) 8)  :cheer:  :read:

Matrix affect, now that sounds fun!!! i've got the box set by the way 8)

now iv'e found why DD EX was being decoded,(avr's extended suround option) iv'e turned it off so back to good old DD.

p109 of yr manual. You have clearly assigned yr optical to hdmi av1. I dont have quite the same function on my amp I have to use av3/4. I now understand. You must try war horse.

Pooped after 'doing' Chriatchurch. Always use Pure, Straight or Standard unless the broadcast is lacking seriously. BBC proms case in point. Very flat so use dsp concwrt hall.
