optical cable with no hd sound

hi all and glad to join these forums,

just upgraded to the onkyo 606 and already have samsung bdp1400 blu ray player.

i cant get any hd surround through optical connection neither dd hd or dts hd with i am legend (dd hd) or die hard 4 (dts hd),with die hard 4 i get just dts.is it not possible through optical?? i think my hdmi cables are a little on the old side so i am in the process of ordering some 1.3a cables but just curious about optical connections in the meantime.

Is the bluray player setup to output HD or PCM?

No, not possible via optical.

its set to output bitstream the only option other than pcm
