No official Oppo Blu Ray player launch in Europe.
But still, in Denmark both the BDP-80, BDP-83 and BDP-83SE have been CE marked for the EU market by a joint venture of dedicated dealers.

Don't you have a similar situation in the UK?

What difference would that make? Does it give an official manufacturers guarantee, does it make it oficially supported by the manufacturer and not on an ad-hoc basis by the resellers?

The contract is always with the supplier, anything else is a bonus.

The contract is but if the box is fubared the repair or replacement is funded by the manufacturer, ultimately. That's what it means.

It makes the difference, that the product is authorised for sale in Europe.

As for guarantee you are protected in exactly the same way as for all other consumer electronics.
I guess Oppo Europe will not have any direct support, as the product is purchased from the US. But you actually never contact the manufacturer directly in Denmark. You have to go via the supplier, so no real difference there.

Oppo on the other hand knows the product is sold in Europe. This is completely transparent.

I hope not. The cynical way they abused the trust of WHF over their claims to be opening a UK shop, just to profit from the massive bonus of free publicity in the mag via a review, should mean they are persona non grata for the mag, in my view,

While you are entitled to your view of events, it's not one we share.

the_lhc:It's pretty simple really Garth, the magazine reviews stuff that is actually on sale in this country. The Oppo isn't, so there's nothing to review.

And there you have it: you couldn't ask for an answer from a much higher authority, could you?

So how come What Hifi reviewed the Oppo BDP83 then?

That wasn't actually on sale in this country either at the time regardless if it was going to be until it got scrapped over here....Well if you actually read the review, you will see the reason!!! "Oppo has assured us that the'831 will be on sale in the UK via its oppostore.co.uk website by the time you read this"

Plus this company based in Oxford sell both the Oppo's.....

http://ukhdmi.com/search/

As do CRT Projectors, who are based in Norfolk

http://www.crtprojectors.co.uk/ They're not 'Official', they're grey market imports.

No, in the sequence of events:

1) WHF won't review any Oppo products, citing non-UK retail outlet as reason;

Oppo declare intention to open UK outlet;

WHF run review;

Oppo pull plans to open in UK.

Make of those facts what you will.

Not quite correct - we'd reviewed (and highly rated) several Oppo DVD players previously. But they were in general UK distribution, whereas the Blu-ray players never have been,
