Hi, there are some good deals around at the moment on the Onkyo TX-SR875, must be a new model in the pipeline. I'm tempted by it as I recall the excellent reviews it received, including in this magazine. I don't doubt its AV performance. However, I enjoy listening to stereo as well. Has anyone got one of these machines and can comment on its stereo performance? What level of stereo amp would you say it's equivalent to?

Thanks.

Fed with a very good signal source I find it an excellent stereo amp.
It has a massive transformer, quality components which give a clean uncoloured output with attack and vibrancy. Have not listened to much recently on a A/B comparison but my ears tell me it's very good.

Many people 'in the know' have one of these sat at home.

I will second that. I am only running a 5 star budget Marantz cd player to it and it sounds rather good to me. You can't not check it out at the prices it is going for.

Would the 875 be too powerful for the KEF3005SE's? I got the KEFsas I was about to spend £400+ on a receiver but since I the 875 is few hundred more i'm getting tempted to get that

Quality of music is a very subjective thing. What sounds excellent to one person, may be unnaceptable to another. The only true way to judge for yourself is an audition.

AV amps are being crammed with more and more technology nowadays, and this does have an effect on the overall budget allocation. Amplification tends to suffer, which in turn reflects on the quality of speakers they're able to drive effectively. Having said that, many people will be happy with the level of quality on offer. The type of speaker package used will also affect musical quality. A sub/sat system won't perform as well as a speaker package based around hi-fi speakers (KEF iQ5SE's and Monitor Audio BR5's for example). Try the two types of packages to see which you prefer.
