I'm itching to get into home cinema but there are a few problems, the main one being my other half that's not keen on having speakers everywhere plus, we have an 'L' shaped lounge which could pose a problem siting them.

I'm seriously considering the Onkyo 505 with Q acoustics 1030's or Eltax symphony 8.4's as budget is also a factor, the system would also be used during the day for radio/music.

The question is, would the 505 work in a 2.1 mode or could you suggest a system of equal quality. I'm drawn to the 505 in the hope that, one day, the wife will agree to more speakers and build on the system.

Thanks in advance.

the onkyos work in stereo mode, which will incorporate a subwoofer if connected. I would advise you to get the 605 or the forthcoming 606, as they support HD audio via HDMI, the 505 does not. The last thing you want to do is spend money on kit that you is already behind the times. with regards to budget, with the 606 being brought out (one extra HDMI) the 605's will probably drop in price.
