Onkyo CR-515 and optical input question.

If I connect my macbook to the optical in on the back of my Onkyo, will music played from itunes go through the onboard DAC? or is that just for the onkyo's CD player?

I think what I am asking is if I need an external DAC to get the best, or is the Onkyo ok.

It will go through the internal DAC on the Onkyo. The 515 should have a Wolfson DAC in it so should be decent. I don't think it pays to go via external DAC in your case as it will easily cost as much as or more than your 515. So invest in a Toslink cable and enjoy!
