An update of the product, or an update on the availability of more stock? Or what were they trying to sell you instead?

emotion-5.gif

I'd suggest that there may be some new Onkyos this year at some point - no inside knowledge, but most major Japanese companies tend to refresh their ranges once a year. Mind you, there's also the argument that the current products are selling so well it could be tempting to leave well alone.

Like you, we'll have to wait and see...

OK well this is what I have so far, and it's all very unofficial as no word yet from Onkyo Europe

Onkyo TX-SR506 - as current TX-SR505, plus:
  • 3 HDMI inputs (but only switching)
  • Audyssey Dynamics EQ
  • 10W more power all round
  • New remote
  • Biamp capability in 5.1 configuration
  • Zone 2 instead of Speaker A/B switching

TX-SR576 as above but may have HDMI audio capability

TX-SR-606 (pictured) as current TX-SR605, plus
  • 4 HDMI inputs
  • Audyssey Dynamics EQ
  • 10W more power all round
  • New remote
  • An extra component video input
  • May also have a scaler, but this is unconfirmed.
No prices or availability yet - details above taken from US sources.

Audyssey Dynamics EQ works in conjunction with the Audyssey 2EQ system to adjust the balance of the sound to compensate for changing volume levels, giving a more consistent sound when listening at low volumes.

More if and when we have it.

Yeah right - 8" clearance all round (4" at the back) George Forman would be proud of this beauty!

Looks like April will be great with new Onks and new Pana line ups.

I've got pics of the back too but no idea how to stick them here. Powered Zone 2 is noticeable - and cool (I just hope it is).

Here are some more specs completely lifted. Sounds like PR boys talk - interesting though.

Correcting Room Distortion and
Loudness with Audyssey 2EQT and
Audyssey Dynamic EQT
The TX-SR606 uses Audyssey 2EQ to counter
distortion created by walls, furniture, and other
objects.This technology detects speaker distance,
and then sets levels, delays, and crossovers, while
also measuring room acoustics. Compared to oneposition
room correction systems,Audyssey 2EQ
covers a much wider listening area. Moreover, it
corrects problems in both frequency response and
time domain (where most of the problems lie)
across the entire listening area. The results are
immediately obvious-a clear, well-balanced and
natural sound.
After 2EQ calibration, Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves
the problem of deteriorating sound quality at lower
volumes. The professionals who create music and
movies do so at reference levels much louder than
typical home listening levels. When volume is
reduced on a standard home theater receiver, the
bass disappears, voices change, and the surround
soundstage becomes less enveloping. As volume is
adjusted on the TX-SR606, however, Dynamic EQ
selects the best possible frequency response and
surround levels moment-by-moment, resulting in an
ideal listening experience at any volume level.
Bi-Amping Capability for High-Impact
Movies and Music
The TX-SR606's surround back speaker channels
enhance the ambience and sound effects of movies.
They can also be used with the front left and right
channels to provide two separate amplification
channels for compatible bi-amping speakers (i.e.
those with two sets of input terminals). In effect,
two separate channels drive the woofer and
tweeter of each front speaker. This improves sound
quality by maximizing power to the low-/mid- and
high-range frequencies, respectively. It also gives you
a more powerful, dynamic soundfield for twochannel
music and movie sound effects.
Music Optimizer to Support Compressed
Digital Music Files
While MP3 or AAC files may sound fine on a
portable digital player, the limitations of these
compressed files can be exposed when played back
through a home entertainment system. Onkyo has
designed onboard Music Optimizer technology to
improve the quality of compressed audio signals.
Compressed music loses a substantial amount of bit
information at higher frequencies, so the Music
Optimizer technology works to overcome this
limitation and enhance audio quality.

Most of which is carried over from the old versions.

Anyone who trumpets the suggested distance around the amp obviously hasn't a) read a lot of manuals, most of which suggest similar clearances around AV receivers or b) used the TX-SR605 much. It really doesn't run any hotter than most rival designs.

But it's a good urban myth...

Damn. Those 4 HDMi sockets would have come in handy.

urban myth...???

Are you saying that this amp doesn't run hot - really quite hot?

You know, it sounds like you're blowing smoke too.

Thanks for the insult but no, IME these amps run no hotter than any other AV receiver of their kind. I have an 875 which is run for many hours each day, and it gets vaguely warm.

Didn't mean to insult you - just felt you were being a tiny bit condescending, as the web is plastered with hundreds of individuals having problems with this issue. Not only that, but I have read several reports from leading magazines to the same effect (one reporter even burned himself). Doesn't matter anyway if this has been resolved.

The web seems to be plastered with hundreds of individuals repeating the same anecdotal evidence.

If that had really happened, the reporter should have demanded that the product be withdrawn immediately as being unsafe.

BTW after posting that comment last night, I put my hand on the 875 here, which had been running fairly hard from 7.45pm until almost midnight. It was absolutely cool, and has only about 3in of space above it, although admittedly it's sitting on a shelf with a lot of space either side of it.

Was planning to take the plunge tomorrow and buy the 605.....until I read this post!!! I don't need more than 2 HDMI inputs (although never know in the future?) but the sound equalisation at low volume levels does sound like something useful. Is this gimmick or actually really work well at lower volume levels?

The changes seem evolutionary (I'm no expert..indeed a beginner in home cinema) not revolutionery so could I be missing out on a much better product in the 606 and hence worth waiting a month or two?

Please help as I really not sure if to take the plunge yet?

Cheers

Ambrose

That's really interesting Andrew. I too have the 875, but it does run very hot!

Not that it has ever affected its performance, or in fact ever bothered me.

However, the top of the unit (especially at the back on the right hand side) gets so hot, that you can't physically touch it! I was prepared for it to run hot, but is this normal or should I get it checked?

Can't say - we haven't heard it in action.

You could, but then the new one might be a total dog. And we're not sure on the pricing, either...

The 605 is still an outstanding buy, and one I'd suggest you could invest in with confidence.

All I can report is that the one we had in the office ran warm when really hammered, whereas the one I have at home seems to run really cool. It's on an Atacama Equinox, standing alone on the bottom shelf, if that helps...

Thanks Andrew for your comments. I feel happier now investing in 605. Hopefully it won't run too hot either as only 1cm clearance at top in wood TV shelf!!!

Aside from that, I noticed a post saying the AS2 Sub with B&W package was pants and PV1 wasn't great. Sounds like they were talking rubbish, but could you recommend another Sub up to £400 which would be significantly better then the AS2 or better to stick with AS2? My lounge is 16ft by 16ft and also like the fact that the AS2 has solid baffle as have an inquisitive CAT!!!!

Thanks

Ambrose

One cm is really, really close. I'd suggest investing in a little whisper fan to keep things cool if the shelf is that close.

No, I reckon the AS2 sub is fine. And as you say, catproof.

Any suggestions on where to find said whisper fans?

take my word as a previous PV1 owner, it's real worth is about 400 quid. my new rel 305 batters it and cost 200 quid less, biggest mistake i ever made in buying av and 2 channel audio gear in 24 years!! also had a Onkyo 875 for three months last year before getting the far far superior Denon 4308 and the other poster is correct, it got RED HOT at average level after about 30 mins, also put a clicking noise through my speakers when swtched on, so of it went fot the Denon which has been fantasic. the Onkyo's are good but way,way overated
