Not connecting via optical out....

I've added a Wiim pro plus to my aged Marantz cdp but I'm having no joy connecting via the optical out. It works fine connecting via rca (but I'm guessing that's a pointless thing to do?). Is this likely to be the age of the cdp (Marantz 63se) or does anyone have any suggestions. Obviously I've played with settings via the app

Hi, WiiM has a simple basic Dac inside. Better will be to use WiiM as Streamer only, CDP as transport only and run them in digital out into better dac or amp with dac like Audiolab 6000, new Rega Brio mk7 or Arcam A5. It will sound a lot better, e.g. WiiM via a good dac, streamer in WiiM is very good. But this is some invest, I know.

Do you have to turn on the Marantz’ optical output? Some machines are switched.
(Edit: looks like no switch, just a little plug that you hav e obviously removed?

And you’re connecting to the optical input on the Wiim? Are you using their supplied cables? And switching to that input?

What is the reason for connecting it to the WiiM? Are you trying to see if the WiiM (having a newer DAC) sounds better?

If so, (and assuming the WiiM just passes the analogue signal through), connecting RCA will just bypass the DAC.

I recently connected my Kenwood CD player to my Marantz amp via Optical but the optical output did not seem to work until I switched the player off and back on again (perhaps there is some detection software when the CD player is switched on? Just a wild guess on my part).

Anyhow, as long as you have it connected from the CD output to the WiiM input with a working cable, it should work.

I’ve run my CD player through my WiiM Ultra’s DAC.
Firstly, I’m not sure about the pro plus, but you need to select Optical input on the app for it to work. I’m sure you’ve done that, so - if so - I’m not sure what the problem is.
However, rest assured, to my ears the WiiM internal DAC is nothing special.
