Hello, Following months of research I have finally made this decision on my home cinema system. I have the following on order for delivery in the next fortnight – Woohoo!

Panasonic P37X10B, Denon AVR 1910 & Kef 2005.3

In addition to that I already have: PS3 (old 80gb version) Sky SD

My question is, given that I only have scarts in my very old current set up, what cables/interconnects do I need get to maximise the video and audio from my new system and what should I connect to what?

Your help would be really appreciated.

Thank you

You need an HDMI to go from your PS3 into the Denon and another one from the Denon into the TV. For Sky, you'll still need a Scart into the TV but can't remember if the Sky box has an optical out or not. If it does, an optical cable into the Denon, otherwise, just a standard RCA phono cable I guess.

You'll also need speaker cable to hook the KEF speakers to the Denon.

Thank you.

I'm sorry, I know you are very good but I am still a little confused! I understand the HDMI and speaker cable but......

The Sky box does not have an optical out. Therefore, are you saying that I simply need a scart to scart from the sky box to the tv and an RCA phone from the sky box to the denon?

That would be a big injustice with this setup, I am surprised Sky still sells boxes without optical out

Thank you for your comments - very useful.

I have to amdit I am having to toy with the idea of SKY+HD as a solution to this problem but I am finding it difficut to justify the spend at the moment.

In the short term, the most important thing to me is that I get the best from what I have and at least get some sound through my 5.1's when veiwing films on my standard sky box for example. So I've bought the best avaialble scart to scart to run from my standard Sky box and am now looking at RCA phono leads to run from the Sky box to the 1910. Can anyone recommend a good cable for this (only needs to be short - 1 metre)?

Thank you

Five or so hours later I have acheived the following...

  • HDMI from PS3 to Denon 1910
  • HDMI from Denon to Panasonic P37X10
  • Rooftop ariel into TV
  • Speaker/sub cable to Kef 2005's
  • Scart from SD Sky box to TV
  • RCA phon0 from SD Sky box to Denon

My PS3 seems to be working fine but I have two problems...

[*] When I change the TV and Denon input to Sky, I get sound but no picture
[*]I don't seem to be able to tune freeview (even though it is accessible at my postcode)

Any ideas would be really apreciated.

Thank you

The Sky box is just connected via scart to the TV? Can't be anything complicated there to go wrong. Check you've got the tv set to the correct input and the scart lead plugged into the correct scart socket (do some tv's have a scart out socket in addition to scart in?)

Not sure about the freeview, but even if the reception is poor I would expect the basic channels to work.

Thanks for that. Clearly it was a bit too late to be messing about last night. I checked this morning and there was a loose connection where the scart entered the Sky box (schoolboy error).

Still no joy with freeview though, which although not needed given that I have Sky, I'd still like to know it's there should I ever need it.

Off back to the Denon 1910 manual now (oh joy) to see it I can get sound though all five speakers and sub which hasn't happened yet. I have a feeling there may be another question or two before the day is out!

Forget those Denon AV receiver manuals they are a nightmare. I recently set mine up and had a few teething problems also. Just list any specific problems in detail here and someone will give you a remedy in plain english. Who knows I may even be able to help you with one or two things. My first post seeking advice started a bit like yours!
