I am currently thinking of getting some new hi-fi separates and was looking along the lines of the budget system (as i'm not looking to spend too much) recommended in What Hi-Fi's May 2008 issue, ie, Marantz CD6002 cd player, Marantz PM6002 amp and the Monitor Audio Bronze BR2 speakers. I've found these at a combined price of around £580 but am hoping I could get lower with a bit of shopping around. I currently have a home cinema setup consisting of a Denon DVD-1930 player and a Denon AVR-1507 amp with Tannoy EFX 5.1 speakers. I've a few questions I would like answered :- 1. would using the above Marantz player and amp give a noticeably better sound than the Denon player and amp combination (using the Monitor Audio speakers, not my current Tannoys - I'm assuming the Monitor Audios are the better choice) ? 2. if I were to spend a little extra to improve the sound of my proposed purchase where is it best to spend the extra cash - the speakers, the amp, the cd player, or do they all contribute equally ? 3. also looking to buy a system for my son who is very much into dance and hardcore music, so bass is important. Would the Marantz and Monitor Audio combination suit his needs ? Thanks for any info that can be given.

You cannot use the AV system for music because the satellite speakers do treble and the sub does bass, therefore there is no midrange.

The Marantz/Bronze package will be alright and considerably better than the AV system.

I already use the Denon for playing music. What i was getting at with my first question was could i use these for music with just a pair of better speakers than the tannoys i currently use.

Generally speaking, if you can afford it, it is better to have independant AV and HiFi setups. A Marantz PM6002 should sound a lot better with stereo than your Denon AV receiver.

With regards to your sons needs.... If you are after bass on a budget, I would recommend some rear ported bookshelf speakers which can be positioned to the wall for the amount of bass you require. Also, look to B&W, because they a known for being a bit more boomier than the Monitors, maybe the 686??

If you were looking at just upgrading your existing kit, you need to be setting a budget based on how much you may get for your old kit. The DVD player you have is a keeper. Although Onkyo are getting all the press at the moment for receivers, if you are after really good stereo sound, a better Denon or Marantz receiver are worth looking at, but still not as good as an independant amplifier. With the speakers, you will get much more presence for stereo with a normal speaker package as opposed to a lifestyle speaker package. I can personally recommend the BR2AV package, which is good with stereo and films.

1.Yes. I made a similar move last year; definitely worth the effort imo.
2.I would go with the last option.
3.Roksan Kandy combo might suit his needs better; Roksan Kandy L3 followed by the Exposure amps. All are good with Rock and give you very good bass

All the best.

Stevee, I have the Marantz 6002 amp CD player and the Monitor Audio BR2s. Amp and CD Player are brilliant. I would urge you to demo more speakers than the BR2. I was running the amp and cd players with old Acoustic Energy Aegis One speakers but I broke one and needed some speakers fast (I had intended to save up for some around the £350) I snapped up the BR2s on Ebay for £120 without hearing them (Big Mistake). Although they are more detailed than the acoustic energy speakers they can sound a bit harsh. I think the work 'bright' is normally used to describe this but I prefer to describe as 'harsh'.
I think that the amp and cd player could handle much more expensive speakers so it might be worthwhile to keep hold of your tannoys for now. Anyway - LISTEN BEFORE YOU BUY!!

Good Luck

Thanks for all replies and advise.

Think i'll be going with the Marantz 6002 cd and amp, but may look at other speakers than the Monitor Audio BR2's i was originally thinking about. Think i'll take a look at the B+W speakers(either the 685's which What Hi-Fi also recommended in the May 2008 issue, or the 686's that tom83cat suggested - is there any difference in these two speaker sets, apart from £100 ?).

THe 685s are larger than the 686s. That's the only difference I know

Give the BR2s a listen. They should, on paper work with the Marantz. And as you have been used to listening to music with your existing set-up, you will notice a massive improvement. I seem to remember this mag suggesting the 6002s with the BR2s.

I think Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 would go well with the Marantz equipments. Depends on the choice of music, but for classical/jazz, it would be a killer combination. As for your son, entry Mordaunt Short speakers will rock.

I listen to all sorts but mainly indie type guitar bands (used to have hair and listen to metal but those days have passed me by), so i'm assuming the Mordaunt Shorts would be ok for myself as well.

This is really a pain as i know the golden rule is to listen before buying but living in South West Wales there are very few audio specialists around. There are a few places in Cardiff (50 mile away). Richer Sound supply the Marantz 6002 amp and cd player but not the speakers i was originally looking at.

Not sure what will best suit my taste. The Monitor Audio BR2's, the B+W 685's, or now the suggested Mordaunts. All budget speakers but even the BR2's and the B+W's have a £200 price difference. Are they worth the extra ?
