Tom from Polaraudio came round with some earphones today, including the 5 star DTX102iE, the version with a mic MMX102iE and the DJ headphone with a mic the T51i.

I have to say I was very impressed with all of them.

The 102iE is much cheaper than it's 3 times earphone of the year predecessor but is in my opinion even more enjoyable. They seem to have a warmth and enveloping sound on top of the precise, natural sound of the outgoing model. Listening to tracks from Radiohead, Claptone and Mason provided different genres that all came across really well on the new Beyers. Lots of instrument separation and detail, yet managing to combine a solid bass element too (which of course is de rigeur these days, and often overdone). I don't think the old model did this quite as well.

In short, the best £75 earphones I have heard so far.

The T51i was also impressive, but I didn't expect anything else having heard it's twin brother the T51p a few months ago. If you want some DJ cans then these are up there with the best from AIAIAI and Reloop.

I think I may treat myself to a pair of MMX102 anyway.

Hi JoelSim

I stumbled across your post with interest - I've had a couple of sets of the DTX101iE, as they were favoured by What Hifi.

I loved what they did at the top and middle but found that the bass swamped the other ranges a bit.

I know it's subjective but do you feel the DTX102iE deliver more or less bass?

Also, I've been disapointed with how robust the DTX101iE turned out to be - I've had both sets come unglued, with the bud sections separating from the cable / housing sections (exposing the innards). I managed to get the 1 set replaced, just inside the warranty period (only had 1 year from the reseller), but the 2nd ones have gone the same way. I've had to repair / glue them twice and now one of the buds has ceased working altogether. Very frustrating.

I personally consider £70ish a lot of money if things aren't going to last. I know there are much more expensive products on the market but just can't justify the price really. Also, I don't use them enough to warrant their short life expectancy (probably averaging only once a week use) and can't help feeling that something coming unglued simply means you need to use better glue!

Additionally, I read on a US website some worrying news about the MMX102iE having manufucturing issues - early purchasers (via amazon.com) reported breakages. Beyerdynamic claim to know about these problems and to have addressed them but considering my experiences with their predecessors, it's hardly reassuring news.

If you reckon the 102s are more bassy than the 101s, have you any tips for a nice neutral set of in-ears for under £100 (and which don't fall apart with ease)? These would be for use with a phone (i.e. I need low impedance).

Many thanks,

Gary

Hi Gazzawazza,

I personally haven't had any problems from customers on my Beyerdynamic ranges, I think one return in total.

The MMX102 is much bassier than its predecessor, the old version was very lean. I was very impressed with them.

Other choices at this price range would include thinksound and for a little more Klipsch which are both very solid.

Hi JoelSim

Thanks for the response.

Do you reckon the MMX101iE are better than the DTX equivalent (assuming I could still source them)? I think What Hifi reckoned they were sonically an improvement (i.e. the mic / phone control wasn't the sole reason for the higher price). If there is a difference, could you try to describe the difference?

Could you provide any specific product codes / models for the thinksound and klipsch to look at?

Finally, you mention customers on your Beyerdynamic ranges - you sound like you're a reseller. You part of polaraudio or another company? Might as well give you consideration, since you're trying to help me.

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary,

The DTX and MMX are exactly the same, the only difference is the mic function. I asked Tom from Polaraudio this specific question last week. If adding the mic makes a difference then it will be very very difficult to ascertain.

I'm not part of Polaraudio, they are Beyerdynamic's UK distribution arm.

With regard to thinksound the ms01 is the best, I don't have any stock of this at the moment but will be getting some more soon. Klipsch do some excellent earphones, the X7i and the X11i.

Trading on the forum isn't allowed but I have a livechat function and phone number on the website if it's easier.

Joel
