Hi i have an arcam a65,cd72 and p80 bi wired thru proac tablette 2000s on custom design stands chord cobra connects and rumour 4 cable...the system is 5 years old and was a massive step up from my old gear...but i fell im still lacking bottom end..i visit friends with much inferior kit and notice the punchy bass immediatey...at first i thought because my old speaker tweeters give up i was being to harsh with the proacs but that bit of bass would make a superb set up complete. the p80 was an addtion to try and address this. ..ive read a few blogs on the proacs on this issue should i try another speaker...or what can i change?...the sound otherwise is fantastic...any suggestions grateful...tom

The obvious choice would be to buy floorstanding speakers, although you don't state the size of room.....

If you need to keep the Proacs, then maybe a sub would be the ideal solution. Again, we need to know the room-size desired.

hi..its approx 15x10feet wooden floored victorian room with high ceiling i have the speakers on the long wall about 9 feet apart....thanks for your suggestions

Bigger bass speaker or more smaller ones in large floorstanders = more bass. it's not rocket science. 😱)

Tom, your kit list is excellent, so my suggestion is that your lack of bass and your friend's punchy bass, is infact because your kit is more hifi than theirs. Listen again to a few tracks on your system and then with a friend's system. Does your bass sound more precise? Do the notes start and stop quicker? Can you pick out the bass notes easier, hear the kick drum more? Does your friends system sound muddy? Is the bass deep but unclear? Does it overpower the lower midrange?

If the answer to the above is, no my setup sounds like my friend's, but it has less punch, then you have the worst of both worlds. But if the answer is yes, my bass may not sound as punchy, but it far clearer, then you have a hifi bass where you can truely appreciate the musicianship of the bass player and drummer.

I found my Musical Fidelity a bit bass light at first. But now, I would not trade its clarity for any extra, muddled punch.

A good quality sub would seem the way forward. Loads to choose from but something quick and musical rather than a dull thud is advisable. My REL Stampede made a huge difference to the whole presentation of music - all for the better. I have a Victorian room of similar dimensions to yours. Try one from your dealer and give it a go. I did and it didn't go back!

Nah, stop messin' around with diddy subs and get these bad boys...

Dual 15" bass drivers!

97db efficiency - so very easy to drive with what you already have - and go down to 24hz

Only about £500

Alternatively get bidding on the very next pair of good Celestion Ditton 44 or 66 speakers that come up on the 'bay. (12" bass drivers). Few budget substitutes among modern hifi speakers under about £8K

Astonishing bass especially if you raise them up on short spiked stands (6" or 8" stands should do the trick).

I second Chebby's suggestions ... the ditton 44's and 66's are awesome! .... and appear regulary on ebay for reasonable prices .... dont own a pair, but was on my 'wish list' and was recommended by many

a quick solution: sell your existing speakers then buy these B&W DM14 speakers for a buy it now of £180 (I have no affiliation to these)

ebay item 270466211825

these cost approx £1000 in 1982 (which was a heck of a lot of money!)

LOL.

However both of my suggestions were (sort of) serious especially the Celestion Ditton 44's. Both options would cost either £500 or well under.

The Cerwin Vegas were highly favourably reviewed by _____ as a legitimate hifi speaker and I know the Celestion's are still capable of sounding very good.

S'ok, you're welcome. I should add though that if you are looking into installing loudspeakers in your space rocket, that it would be, er... rocket science.

Boy racer speakers by the look of them, or hairdresser's speakers. 😉

If your speakers are 9 feet apart on the long wall of a room roughly 10 by 15 how far away from them are you sitting? Maybe if you can get them closer together you`d find some improvement without having to buy new kit, just a thought.

On the matter of suitably bass heavy cancidates I must throw (figuratively!) Leak 3090`s into the ring.

I agree with Joel reference the Chameleon, will have to see on the rack front once I get mine........

The guy at Richer is a bit short-sighted. A good sub will add that missing element you're after. I use a sub with my Hi-Fi and wouldn't go back. Preferable to floorstanders in my experience.

Mind you, if he's referring to saddling expensive speakers with a cheap sub, he may have a point.

Different subs have different connections. For Hi-Fi you're probably better off looking at subs with high level/speaker connections. This will take a signal straight from the speaker terminals of your amp.
