Hi guys, looking at getting a Hifi system for my new home the main ways I listen to music is through my phone so if possible a jack to jack or some kind of connection would be helpful. my budget is around 150 pounds. I know this is low and I understand there may not be an available system out there. Basically I am looking for an amp and some floor standing speakers. Any advice will help me on creating my new sound system ( as I really don't have a clue where to start)

Cheers guys

Rob

Not much budget best to browse on ebay for some stuff, probably have a look at some Mission FS, not sure about amps maybe an Arcam 3 they go for about £40. Or maybe some old NADs would be better. See what you can find and then come back.

I have just purchased some fostex active a speakers for the kitchen for £175 ill report back when I get them, ill give you an honest opinion compared to a 3.5k hi fi

Given the budget this is way the best solution.

Floorstanders are obviously out of the question, a very good thing in my view at this end of the price scale.

A pair of Sudiospares/Seiwin 5a or 6a active speakers (£120-140 pr) would be the way to go, you would need a mini jack to 2 phono lead of appropriate length to make it work and could add an Airport Express or a dock later.

If you are remotely interested in the sound quality, this is definitely your best option for the money.

Hi ROb, also check out Gumtree - you oftenget whole systems practically given away for the money you're looking to put down. Check out your area or within a reasonable driving distance. You never know. See also Ebay for the same. Actives are another option too (around £250 will get you either a pair of KRK Rokit 5s or Yamaha HS50s) and £150 will get you something by M-Audio or Fostex. Pop in to your local pro-audio store and the guys there will usually be able to give you a spin of whatever models they have hooked up.

Or the far better Studiospares/Seiwin models mentioned in my post above. Way better than anything else for the money.

A 6 inch 2way system, bi-amped with 80 + 40 watts per speaker, just £137 pr.

Fairly prosaic styling but solidly made, great value.

I'm sure, that, on a one-page thread Dave, that the OP could work out what you'd written two posts up. This isn't a p*ssing contest, and you're opinion is no better than anyone else's. Doesn't make you the sole arbiter of what makes for great audio. Personally, I love Genelec actives, but others dislike them. Who's right? Same principle here. So could you maybe just can the whole "I know best" attitude?

Hi Drabod ,

Just scanned e-bay and found this :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NAD-310-Stereo-Integrated-Amplifier-/251322950329?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item3a8403e2b9

I bought my little sister the 710 when she went to college ( same amp but with a tuner built in ) it has a front 3.5mm input on the front , not pretty but a quick connection option for a phone which I guess is good . Even if the price jumps to 40 quid it still leaves you alot of budget left for speakers . I'd guess this amp is about 12-15 years old

Harsh, recordspot, but fair. DDC does get a bit carried away sometimes, but then, we all do.

But then, that is only his opinion, which by his own admission is no better than anyone elses.

Personally I do not believe that all opinions are equal, but then that's me.

I prefer an informed opinion to one from someone who hasn't a clue, but that goes against the grain on here.

That said, my second post was rather unnecessary, it was late, I couldn't sleep and I was a bit bored. Anyway, I promised JD I wouldn't 'have a go' at other contributers whatever I might think....... :silenced:

So, another viewpoint that offers up alterantive considerations isn't worth thinking about? I rather think that's not quite someone that hasn't a clue, but that offers the OP something to also consider. I value those posts because it's not prescribed, leaves the buyer to mull things over. Still your ego is your problem.

Oh, and I think if you want to refer to me, then have the courtesy to do it directly.

The difficulty with your suggestion/advice is that the budget is @ £150 which Dave's suggestions match particularly well. If one has £150 to spend then I would respectfully suggest that £250 is too far away from budget to suggest.

I was trying to speak generally about the tendency on this forum to give equal creedance to all opinions, informed or otherwise.

I was actually trying not to be confrontational.

It is not all about you.
