They used to increase prices in April. It always seemed a bit crazy to me as 1 April press releases always look like spoofs at first even if they aren’t.

I think it might be because many Brits still use the 6 April tax year as an accounting date.

Glad I've got the Naim bug out my system ( Literally) and able to move on to more sensibly priced bang for your buck....not that there's anything wrong with the Naim products as such....it's just, once you have a black box .....you just keep looking at getting more black boxes 🤣🤣

Hi,
Here is a link to a google share where someone has collated the THD for many amplifiers at 5watts into 4ohms. Naim do not do very well.

Naim are at 236th, 312th, 358th, 359th, 363rd,364th, 403rd.

There is no reason for the high THD, and this is how they obtain their house sound.

Shadders.

Do you reckon the THD is audible at that level? But if your theory is right, then that surely is the reason?

In my experience, Naim do have a forward ’energetic’ sound that’s either exciting or tiring depending on your preferences.

Hi,
I think that THD is part of it. Although it is relatively high, it is still low enough not to be an issue. I expect that this high level of THD gives the Naim equipment its distinctive sound.

The audible difference between most solid state amplifiers in reality is small, even when it is commented upon.

The other aspect of Naim is that they omit the output inductor. Latest incarnations may have the output inductor. The result of no output inductor is that the amplifier is susceptible to instability for capacitive loads more than others. The instability does not have to be oscillation, but can be peaks in THD for higher load conditions.

My interpretation is that it is a combination of the above.

Shadders.

Yes, I found out that they’ve changed, but not universally. Someone here had a new Naim and was asking about speaker cables. I was about to say you needn’t worry as they’ve sorted that now - but I checked their website and some models still carry cautions about speaker wire.

Very much needing dealer support to avoid failures I suspect!

Hi,
Yes, their manual states that their Naim cables must be used :

"Loudspeaker cables are vitally important. They should
each be at least 3.5 metres long and of equal length. The
recommended maximum is normally 20 metres although
longer cables may be viable with some Naim amplifiers.

Some Naim amplifiers are designed only to work with Naim
loudspeaker cable and using alternatives may degrade the
performance or even damage the amplifier
."

From :

The fact that they state other cables can damage the amplifier, shows that they are aware of their design and engineering "differences".

Other manufacturers increase their prices as well. Most don't announce it; they just do it. I don't see why Naim should get criticised.
There are supply chain issues and semiconductors are very rare, which increases the prices. There is also yearly inflation. Prices have to go up for the manufacturer to keep the same margins.
