i was watching the hospital exsplosion scene from the dark knight blu-ray, the avr was turned up to -10[:$], i have enjoyed this scene many times at high volumes before with no problems, at the moment im only running my dynaudio speakers and my sub, no centre or rears, and ive got the dyns hooked up to my as-500 which in turn is connected to my yamaha rxv765's pre-outs..

the as-500 is set to power 4ohm speakers, do i need to do this with the avr too? do i have that oprtion? i cant find my avr's manual and cant find one online either.. i turned off the power at the socket and when turned back on all was fine..

any ideas of what caused this? cheers guys[Y]

edit....

ive found the manual and it states that i should go into the menu and change the settings to suit 4ohm speakers if they are connected to the front speaker outs... but im unsure what to do as ive got my fronts connected to my stereo amp via pre-outs. should i still change the output on the avr to 4ohms?

The 1065 I used to have, had a option to change the ohms, can't remember exactly how to do it I think you held the "straight" button whilst turning the power on. You maybe able to find a 1065 manual online. Hope this helps

I don't think any Yam AVRs have a 4ohm setting (perhaps high-end models). I can change the setting to 6 ohms on my 1065, and I think you have this option on your receiver, Max. Obviously it goes without saying that you should select this setting as a minimum precautionary measure when driving 4ohm speakers.

Hope the receiver has simply cut-out due to overheating and hasn't blown...

I would suggest taking the as500 out of the loop, connect the speakers direct and try it with and with out it altered to 4ohms.

I don't think its blown as max says he's turned it on and it works again, however, I think if you read the manual (and this is just from memory) that the setting is for speakers 6ohms or less.

hi strapped, as markjaspi said its a setting thats below 6ohms, but i dont know whether or not to use it. in my limited understanding my stereo amp is being used as a power amp while im watching movies, and thats already set to output to 4ohm speakers, im not sure if i should alter the avr's output too

, i guess it cant do any harm though..

I would have thought it made sense to select the 6ohm option on your AVR as well. -10db is extremely loud. I'm picturing Marty McFly when he hooks his guitar up to Doc Drown's amp...

Andrew Everard:Are you sure your AV receiver cut out, and not the A-S500?
the avr's lights went out andrew but the as-500's stayed on, so it looks like it was the avr that cut out.

ive set the avr to under 6ohm but rick tells me thats irrelevant as the avr is only acting as a processor while the as-500 is connected to the pre-outs.

i trhink i need the avr looked at..

daveh75:max, does your sub have high level inputs? If so, i'm not really sure why your even bothering keeping the AVR....
it has 1 av subwoofer line in. and line in right line out right, line in left line out left dave..

hmmm, this is interesting, ive removed my avr from proceedings and rigged up the as-500 as my only amp, all connected up and sounding very nice indeed, i wont be able to get hd audio but thats not really a problem, dolby digital is fine..

the only thing i need to sort is the subwoofer, i set its crossover to around 80 but left the other settings as they were, but it was way too boomy with blu-rays and music, of course the way it was set up was for when it was being powered/controlled by my avr..

if i can get this sub tuned correctly i'll be laughing and it'll be bye bye avr. any tips folks?

btw, good suggestion dave

max, there should be an option in your BDP settings somwhere to decode/downmix HD audio to Stereo....

ta dave , yea ive got that outputting stereo, i started moving the speakers about there, always time consuming but ive got it sorted now..

there's a worrying little issue emerging though, when watching the hospital explosion in the dark knight, with true hd selected on the bdp, there are loud crackles and pops coming from my speakers, i thought that this was part of the effects, but when i turned the sound down a touch i couldn't hear them
