I couldn't give a damn about fashion.* In real life I'm so uncool that the cool kids at work actually think I'm cool. I kid you not.

Anyway I've always wanted a 1210 since I was about 15 and now I'm old enough to afford one I thought to myself "Yeah why not? That looks like it could be fun." So I guess that means that I'm not hipster as I'm genuinly interested in it for hifi reasons. Which is kind of a shame as I quite like the phrase 'vinyl hipster'. It has a kind of ring to it.

* Although I admit that I'll probably have a sly smile on my face if the subject of owning a record player ever comes up in conversation with one of the cool kids at work and I have an opportunity to say that I've got a Technics. ;)

I'm well over it bud. I've still got over 1000 cd's and listen to them as well as vinyl and streaming, I just kinda get more of a kick out my vinyl these days. You all missed my point anyway.

Actually I don't think anybody missed your point. You just latched onto what you thought were the usual whine-a-thons from vinyl haters, but that couldn't be further from the truth certainly in my case, I don't think I could have made that more perfectly clear, but I'm under no illusion of vinyl's insurmountable technical inadequacies.

They think you are cool in an ironic way (hipsters). You are a classical geek (you think military spec turntable is cool). It needs wood to have a soul Steve!!!!!

OMG! I'm a hipster and I didn't even know it.

*dance4*

I knew I was when I outed the Project DC in favour of the Pioneer *dirol*

Okay so it's not anything exotic/expensive or a mighty Technics but, personally, I think it's a cracking deck and couldn't be more satisfied with its performance.

The Pioneer PLX1000 looks like an excellent piece of kit. The only thing it lacks is the name and iconic status that a Technics has but otherwise it's a great option. If I wasn't after a piece of history and something with a bit of investment potential as well as being a record player I'd have given it serious consideration. Those Pioneer's look better than the Rega's and Project's IMO.

Happy new year everyone.

Me neither. There are times I just prefer the sound but that doesn't stop me playing CDs, hires downloads, bluray audio, or whatever.

I like the concept of vinyl - always have done. I'm not the sort of person who likes to favour one format or the other. It's fair to say, as some have mentioned already, that poor quality vinyl can sound a bit s###e, but so can CDs - especially over-compressed recordings. I suppose you could say I'm a 'music-first' person. Wouldn't class myself as a audiophile, but do enjoy high quality sound.

I love the theatre of vinyl. By that I mean the look and feel of a proper album - and you can actually read the sleeve notes without having subsequent eye surgery. There's always a compromise with whatever format you prefer...

C'est la vie.

You are so right about the looks, Steve, it looks nice and chunky and very pleasing on the eye. However, it's a cheap Hanpin Technics wannabee and can't hold a candle to the mighty Technics on an engineering level; but with a decent cart fitted it does sound rather good to my ears.
