I've been looking at this amp and was wondering if anyone here still owns one. Particularly I would like to know about sound quality. Also can you tell me how I can get one repaired if I bought it second hand since musical fidelity wont repair it. My headphone of choice is the AKG-k702. I love these headphones but I am craving a slight punch in the bass department and dont want to change anything else.

MF have a Fine Tuning service where they will upgrade your amp. So if it is out of warranty and broken you can use that service. It is about £160-80 for the X-CAN range. The alternative is to buy the bits off Rock Grotto and then find someone to fix the amp for you. If you ask nicely Rock Grotto will do the repairs, sometimes. It is a one man show and it depends on how busy he is. The most likely fix is new valves and that is equivalent to opneing up a plug and then changing a light bulb. Again google Rock Grotto and there is a pictoral guide.

I fear you will not get the extra slight punch in the bass you crave. but you will get a very clear and detailed bass and, if the recording has lots of bass, you will get lots of bass. AKG and MF do musicality and realism. If you want more bass, Grado is also a good match or a closed or semi closed backed AKG headphone. Second hand the K280 Parabolic is amazing. They pop up on ebay every so often.

Hey idc...thanks for your feedback. Lol, I just read the forum post a couple of hours before you posted it here, it was really unfortunate. I believe what you are saying about the AKG's bass is true, everyone else is saying the same thing. I knew what I was getting into, I just have to get used to it. So I can only double up on the talents the 702s possess...so be it. I will go with the x-cans...according to you and so many other helpful forum members MF and AKG seem to go well. BTW it was really kind of MF to do what they did, that is amazing service. I looked up Rock Grotto thanks to you, I am leaning more towards him doing the upgrade than MF itself, hoping it'll be cheaper. I e-mailed him today, let's see the price he quotes. I'll keep you updated

Shafesk, i agree with idc. U will not get extra bass with xcan. I used to have the xcan v2 (just sold it 2 days ago) but now using the v3 version. I am using the grado alessandro headphones. The combo does not give me extra bass but a more balanced sound between the low and high frequency. I u still can get the xcan over ebay, go for it. I dont think u will regret it.

My closed AKG K44s and semi open K280 Parabolic do more bass than the K702. Or, for when the mood takes you, try the Denon AH D1001 for a real bass fest.

Had the AKG K44s myself....legendary headphones if I am honest at that price...not too durable though. The best sounding closed ears under 60 no doubt....thought about the Denons myself....but for now Im just happy with the 702s.

Hey idc, have you changed the valves in your amp? I understand this voids the warranty...but changing valves is the first thing I want to do to my xcans. Do you know any trusted MF repair guys?

I haven't changed the valves, but I have opened the amp up for a look and to see how easy it would be and it is somethinmg you can do with a screwdriver and allen key. Check out Rock Grotto for advice on valves and changing them.

I actually contacted Rock Grotto to see if they will do upgrades to the amplifier. Unfortunately, he doesnt do this for the amplifier anymore. I am particularly concerned because most users of xcans say that the capacitors go bad and highly recommend I change them as soon as possible. Now I need to find a trustworthy repair guy
