Big Chris:Drummerdave:Big Chris:Craig M.:
anyone got any albums they really didn't like that really grew on them?
i'll start off with one of big chris's suggestions, opeth - blackwater park.
first time i listened to it, i thought it was pants - too much ballady stuff, where's the attitude? listened a few more times now and, ermm, it's rather good

I'm glad you no longer hate 'Blackwater Park', and you were able to give it the time it deserves to appreciate it. It's my fave Opeth album, which just so happens to contain my fave Opeth song, which funnily enough is 'Blackwater Park'.
Mmmmm........More attitude eh? You might want to try 'Deliverance'. If ballady stuff isn't your bag, avoid 'Damnation' like the plague though, (although the combination of mellow acoustics, and brutal metal is one of the reasons I like them).
I'm glad that so many people are embracing Opeth. They're a great band that really deserve greater recognition, and I think people are waking up to the fact it's not right to just stick an "Extreme Metal" label on them. It doesn't do them justice by half.
I agree Chris - no way are Opeth "extreme metal" - they're much too proggy for that and more interesting as a consequence. I've only got the two Opeth albums to date, BWP and Watershed, looking forward to getting more at some point. What would you recommend?
'Orchid', 'Morningrise' & 'My Arms, Your Hearse' are the first 3 albums, and although they're still recognisably Opeth, they're more rooted in their black metal beginnings, so probably not those (Unless you find 'em on eBay for a couple of quid).
'Still Life' came just before 'Blackwater Park', and the two are musically quite similar. As 'BWP' isn't your fave, maybe skip that too for now.
My fave album of theirs after 'Blackwater Park' is 'Deliverance'. Heavier though, as it was released at roughly the same time as 'Damnation' which has nothing but mellow tracks.
'Ghost Reveries' is another great album, but perhaps a tad more commercial than previous releases.
So I'd say 'Deliverance' or 'Ghost Reveries'. I think 'Deliverance' is in the Play.com sale for a fiver too, so seems like a logical step.
