Grimaldi:Perhaps I was a bit harsh. I am just finding it amazing that no one is even trying to dispute these amazing claims.
Geographically I am in no position to take him up on his offer and i doubt that I would be very objective in any case as I don't like the sound of the RS series of speakers.
I don't doubt that the Onkyo sounds OK for a mid level system but an AV amp is an all round compromise (has to power 7 speakers, has enough electronic circuitry for processing, tuner, upscaling, etc).
I understand what you are saying, getting the sound you enjoy is a very personal thing. I do have a liking for the Roger/Spendor sound. Very natural with a exceptional midrange IMHO. I did find the Cyrus sound to be a little brittle and tiring, improved with adding PSX units, and got (for me) good when I replaced the diode bridges, by-passed the caps, wired them with kimber 4TC and replace internal fuses with circuit breakers. Oh and plugged them in with classic powerkords.
The Onkyo and MA RS8 AV system was not very good on music at all when 1st bought it, but was great on Blue ray. Wouldn't even consider it for playing music on, it was closed in, too bassy, big loss of detail, timing was not there. It sounded as most AV amps sound that I heard.
Not so now, and the system is not far short from what I remember my modified Cyrus/Roger/Meridian.
I have a few albums that I know very well, including all the detail buried deep in the music and very few systems I have heard get there.
