You lot are bonkers. Lovely but bonkers.

I don't know, I just dislike film studios. I see them as the enemy as they see me as the same. The irony being that I buy lots of films legitimately. They should see me as a friend not a foe.

I don't mind the AIDS film. Really I don't. I dislike being forced (with a capital F) to endure it. Yes I will go and make a cup of tea. But the studios are wise to that to now. I used to just stick the disc in the player and ****** off for five minutes but that doesn't work anymore because they make you select the language before any of the annoying bits kick off!!! Cunning little swines.

(blushes) Awwwww thank you.

With good reason, if you're off out to buy a DVD writer to flagrantly flout their dastardly copy protection schemes (and if you're looking for something to do it for a Mac, I hear MacTheRipper is just the very worst at it).......

Funny, you seem to have the most astonishing levels of remorse evident whilst promoting individual freedoms. I feel guilty just thinking about it.

The day we can't buy DVDs or Bluray Disks and are locked into subscription, HD on-demand services will be the end of the individual consumer as we know it. Corporates would love to turn us all into annuity income streams. If they manage to (think Nokia unlimited music and soon Apple) it will hurt the artists, hurt the consumer in the pocket and be another kick in the teeth for democracy and free trade. Well, ok, perhaps I'm going a bit far, but really I do feel that as an individual consumer we are often seen as no more than a cog in a big machine to be milked for all we're worth.

JohnDuncan:Torres09:May i be crystal clear that you make a back up copy of the DVD that you have PURCHASED............dont want to be breaking any laws now, do we? Except that's breaking the law as well, but hey.

I thought the European Union had decided that making personal copies for (genuine) back up purposes was a legal right for consumers - I seem to remember something about it in relation to music and make copies for use in your car etc. Maybe you could research this John?

Will,

I personally sympathise with you. I too would take any film back that forced me to watch such a trailer.

I already get very annoyed with DVD's that force me to watch the Copyright warnings with no option to skip for fast forward. Do they really think after watching so many, that I don't know that copying films instead of buying them is a breach of copyright with criminal penalties and so can't give a skip option?

I too don't want to waste minutes sat there being forced to watch something that I don't want to. I take your point Clare about making a cup of tea, but sometimes you just want to get on with it.

Also some of the THX demo intros can be good and I like to watch these sometimes (they can be skipped), the point is, if you go past them, you can't go back to them without stopping and restarting the disc. So if you're showing off your system to someone and want the THX intro because its a particularly good demo of cinema sound, if you go and make a cup of tea during the Copyright statement or Aid for Africa Trailer etc, you can find you've come back and the THX intro has gone and you're left with the film menu, with no option to go back leaving you with no other option than to stop and restart the disc anew and watch the bl**dy Copyright / trailer over again.

Very annoying.

Some countries have a blank media levy and allow it (I'll have to remind myself which ones - Sweden and France ring bells), but the UK definitely doesn't.

Software is different - you're allowed to make a copy for backup.

Further: the EU directive gave countries two choices - ban copying, or introduce a 'blank tape' levy. Most of Europe have gone with a levy (which can mean ?90 on an iPod, apparently), whereas the UK have stuck with a ban for the time being. However, the BPI have previously stated (to the Commons Select Committee in 2006, no less) that those who copy CDs for their own personal use in the UK, whilst illegal, would "not be pursued".......

You could get a Home Theatre PC to play your DVD's, etc. There's software you can get which will skip playback straight to the movie. But perhaps that's bit extreme and expensive, plus there's all those noisy fans, just a thought though.
