Hi,

Im going to be transferring my DVD and CD collection to a digital format and then stream them onto a media player. I was wondering what the best media player would be best for this and whether to attach just a simple External HDD or go for a NAS? And I havent got a very large budget either! so need value for money. Help!

This seems to be a decent value player...

Sure you should be able to find it in the UK or elsewhere as well.

I would go with an external USB 3 docking station and just buy 3.5" drives as and when you need. NAS is expensive, and I don't like all my drives to spin the while time.

Any decent NAS will sspin down after a period of innactivity.

A NAS drive is by far the better option. It offers wireless access from any device, RAID for guard against disk failure and doesn't need lugging around when you move you player.

@ fr0g,

Thanks for the feedback. I think I need to elaborate a bit more (to justify my initial suggestion). I suggested the solution because I am using something similar with fairly decent results.

I currently have 10+ drives (22TB+), so I will need a huge NAS. Going the RAID route will bankrupt me on HDD’s alone, so redundancy is not that a big an issue.

I opted for the docking station and player to allow me to store the HDD’s in a safe after use (theft is always an issue living in South Africa).

I have seen a couple of guys buying mid to high end pc’s for use as NAS media server. Linux OS and some freeware will do the trick, but then again the spinning drive issue (and heat with all the drives).

The wireless is also a bit of a head ache, since a lot of my content is 25Gig +, so direct USB3 or LAN (preferably Gigabit) works best.

I suggested the player, docking station and desktop HDD for budget purposes, since AVFC123 raised the issue of budget limitations. This will provide him with a cheap immediate solution and allow for expansion later on (maybe collect a couple of drives to use in a proper NAS later on)?
