Matching an amp to the Monitor Audio Bronze BX2 5.1 and alternate sub suggestions?

Hi all,

Easy question for you, I'm looking to pick up a home cinema receiver to match the following: a pair of BX2s, the matching centre and two BXFXs. I've been pointed to the RXV673 but have read that it can output 150W whereas the speakers are rated at 100W. I'm probably mistaken but does this mean that the 673 could be turned up enough to blow the speakers? That would be somewhat counter productive for me!

I was also going to wait to pick up the BX sub, but am interested in cheaper alternatives, or advice as to whether I really need it in a smaller space. Do amps such as the 673 have an option to select 'no sub' and therefore use the other speakers to compensate?

I am also planning to feed the amp from both a Sony blu-ray and a Western Digital Live HD, so can I avoid paying for networking capability in an amp, and instead put all my amp money into sound quality?

Thank you!

Hello :)

Don't worry about the power thing, having more power is always a good thing. Yes you can blow the speakers but generally it is actually easier to blow speakers with an underpowered amp that is driven beyond it's unclipped ability than with an overpowered amp that is not clipping.

With respect to subs, BK Electric subs are often recommended for their price/performance ratio. A sub, even in a small room is definitely worthwhile as any speakers that are suitable for a small space simply aren't going to have the depth that a sub provides. It also means that you can get the bass you want without cranking up the rest of the system which can turn out to be much more neighbour friendly.

All AV amps have the ability to select sub or no sub so don't worry about that...

You'll find pretty much any new receiver of a quality worth matching with a BX system will have networking built in now, even if you don't need it for streaming music you may find the control apps & network firmware updates to be a nice bonus.

Thanks Guys,

Do you have any opinions on the suitability of the BXFXs for use in a small room (Vs perhaps the BX1s)? I'm probably going to have to stand mount them as we live in a rented place. And will using a sub from a different range make much difference? I've been advised about tone matching the whole 5.1 system and that the BX Sub would get the best out of it...

Also, any early opinions on the 673, or reccomendations for ideal receivers to match the BX2s etc? Also, is there any cunning way to limit the amp (or the dial?!) so that drunken chums can't destroy my pround new setup?

Thanks again!

Also, has anyone DLNA'd the receivers that the 673 is replacing so that they act as renderers that could be controlled via an app like BubbleUPNP?

Cheers!

You don't want to be stand mounting the FX speakers. I use BR1s as surrounds, and am quite happy. When (if ever) I have my own place I will move to FX sides and move the BR1s to the back.

The Sub is the easiest thing to get away with changing. I use a REL sub with a mixture of BR and BX speakers, and it works great. I find in pure audio mode the system sounds ok without a sub, I use this setup for late night viewing. I have BR5 floorstanders and would definitely recommend a sub for movie use. Im a bit out of the loop with subs as I haven't looked in a few years, but try to find something with a high level input.
