Marantz SR6010 Vs SR7010

Hi Guys,

For the extra £300 what is the real difference between the SR6010 and the SR7010 other than the ability to do full Atmos which in my living room I'm unlikely to do. I see a few difference but I can't see anything really that would make a difference other than Atmos 7.4.2. Am I missing anything obvious?

Main differences are:

1) 7 channel amplification in 6010 vs 9 channel in 7010

2) 2 HDMI outputs in 6010 vs 3 in 7010

3) HD radio tuner in 7010 but not in 6010.

4) Multi brand and learning remote in 7010 vs not in 6010.

Basically, if you think you may go for a 7.1.4 Atmos in the future, then 7010 is worth investing in. Otherwise you'll save decent money with 6010.

The 6010 has seven internal power amps but has nine channel processing, so by adding a power amp you can have 9 channel (7.2.2 or 5.2.4) surround sound.
The 7010 (I have one BTW) has nine internal power amps and processes up to 11 channels, so with a power amp to drive either the front left and right, or as I do with a modest Onkyo M-5010, the top rears, you can have 7.2.4 surround sound.
The power amps of the 7010 are slightly more powerful too.
If Atmos is your intention, go for the 7010 and 7.2.4 sound. It's superb.
Better to spend a couple of hundred extra now, rather than to regret it later, take a huge loss on selling on the 6010, etc etc. All IMHO of course.

Actually the 7010 will manage up to 13 speakers, picking nine or eleven as best fitting the codec you're using.
Either unit can drive "Zone B" speakers, but at the cost of fewer "Zone A" speakers unless you use an external power amp for "Zone B" as well.

Following bigboss's detailing in post #2 and Benedict_Arnold's logic in post #3. if I were in your shoes I wouldn't hesitate - the 7010 it would be. Is there a chance of your moving house in the next, say, two years? If you do move and find yourself in a bigger room such that you could have 7.2.4 Atmos, you would very much regret not getting the 7010.

Given the costs of moving house these days, not to mention Mrs. Boss probably wanting new carpets, new curtains, a new kitchen..... Poor old bigboss's chances of getting a new receiver after moving are about as likely as winning the lottery, putting it all on accumulator at the bookies and winning.

Get the 7010 ;-)

Speakers, that is. You can connect up to 13 using two external stereo power amps.

Not sure how, but the unit decides which speakers would be best and then selects them for you, assigns the decoding channels accordingly. I guess that might mean 7 surrounds plus 4 overheads for Atmos, 7 surrounds, plus 2 front high or sides, and only 2 overheads for DTS:X.

cheers guys, gives me something to think about. Not likely to move anytime soon now, having a new drive in a few weeks time and moving is going to cost to much, so were in this house for at least another 8 years until the mortgage is due for renewal.

are the components of the 6010 and 7010 the same? I read somewhere that the 5010 and 6010 or the 5009 and 6009 were different components and so sounded completely different. I thought I read that the 6000 and 7000 series were the same but the 7000 just did a little more techy stuff!

I'm sure they share the same components. The price difference doesn't justify new components in the same factory.

You may even find the 6010 uses the same chip set only with a couple of channels "switched off".
