wheres my audio visual coach , mr j duncan ?

Without doubt, the Marantz amp will give you a better performance over the Yamaha RX-V765. But I think you should just buy the CD player first & see how it sounds to you with your Yamaha receiver. If you're happy with its performance, then you won't have to spend more. You can always add the dedicated amp later.

no i meant will i get an improvement using the cd player through the yam as opposed to the sony through it ? i wouldnt bother getting the marantz amp first , to use with the sony ..

the reason for this thread is because i need to upgrade in stages , and i guess im looking for whatever will have the most impact on my system , for music or movies , with the e400 ive got right now , i could just about get the centre and sats at the weekend , perhaps they will have the most immediate impact , as ive only currently got the br5s as fronts..

ear:id go for speakers firts.

Sorry, but why upgrade something you've already got? Yes, the speakers will make a difference, but if the OP already has decent speakers (Monitor Audio BR5 according to the signature), I think he should first invest in equipment he hasn't already got, like the CD player. After the CD player & maybe the amplifier, if the upgraditis still bothers you, upgrade your speakers.

do you know what speakers to get?

yes i was going to get the bronze package to pair with the br5s , minus the fronts of course , i can get the centre for e150 , and the dipole bipole (whatever that means) sats for e240 , the sub is e300 , not bad prices afaik , any thoughts ??

thanks guys , should i get those dipole bipole rears then ? ill only ever have a 5.1 setup as my room shape wont take 7.1 , they are e240 , but i can get a pair of these for probably e140 , would they be good enough for rears ?

Max, from reading your posts over the last week or so, i'd say you're enjoying/happy with the music playback from your system, so is a CD player just a case of upgraditis?

If so i'd concentrate on improving the surround sound side of things, by adding the centre/surrounds/sub-After all, thats what you bought the system for in the first place!

i could probably get these for e240 , the same price as the bipoles , but would they be overkill ??

daveh75:I think ear means adding centre/surrounds/sub, as max only has fronts atm...

Hmmm.......I got a bit confused here. I was under the impression that max wants the best out of his system for music (stereo playback), for which centre, surrounds & subwoofer don't help. Ofcourse, some prefer music in surround sound format.

I would personally go for the matching MA rears (BR 1's or 2's)

Not really a fan of mixing and matching speaker brands, even though it's not as important that rears match, as it is with the front three.
