Hi !

Has anyone compared amps from Marantz, and can tell if there is a big difference in the sound quality? 2 years ago I tested the Maranzt Pearl Lite on my speakers, which sounded amazing. I have heard much more expensive amps, but never found an amp which suited my speakers and listning room so well. The sound was very warm, midrange was open, tops where sweet and bass was very controlled. This amp never had problems driving my speakers loud in my room. I have tested amps with 20-30Watts, and I still feel they have plenty of power, so this is not an issue for me.

That's why I am asking if I might consider a cheaper "less powerful" amp for my Marantz, if I still can get the same amazing sound.
I talked to someone who had PM-6005 and Pearl Lite. He meant the difference between those where minimal. He also tried PM-K1 Pearl which he said was a much larger step up from the Pearl Lite, and more high end.

If he is right, the cheaper PM-6005 could possible be good enough for me. Now one of my dealers has an offer on the Marantz PM-5004 which is 40W. Again power is not a problem, I never play very loud anyway as my room is very small.
Do you think the PM-5004 could be a good choice for me? It said that it's built on the same technology as their more expensive products. If it has the same "magic" Marantz sound this could turn out to be enough for me.
PM-5004 has gotten great reviews. Unfortunately I can't try it before I buy.

I appreciate any comments or input.

Technically the PM5004 is quite different from the Pearl Lite you listened to earlier. Marantz has given the PM5004 most family characteristics but at the smallest possible budget. However it might be just what you are looking for. A good audition will answer that. You might also consider the new PM5005 which is replacing the PM5004. There are also nice deals to be had voor the outgoing PM6004 which is the cheapest really serious audiophile grade amp in the line up. I have this amp and it is wonderful.
