I must admit on my nr1200 when I changed from my nad amp into the same speakers, I realised that I was regularly listening at 60% of the volume.
Never really turned my nad amp much above 40.
Yes, that’s what I’d expect. Modern ‘digital’ volume controls don’t give most of their output with only one-third rotation. That was usually designed in to get loud super quickly, giving the impression the amp was powerful. Newer designs are much more controllable, but can give the impression not much is happening, as above.

Rather like a cheap supermini car that has a very quick accelerator action, so you think it’s responsive. Then when you use more pedal you realise you were already pretty much flat out!

Hi all. Sorry for the late reply I've been crazy busy with work. So I finally lugged all the system round to a friends house and bit by bit swapped all the components I was using with his to eliminate what it could be. The speakers work fine which is a relief. (his amp which had an even lower power output played them well) My amp works fine with a line in from his CD. Looks like the problem in the end is the phono input into my Marantz amp. The sound was low and without bass. I then tried to connect my technics to his amp and messed up. Looks like the left channel cable from the technics is a problem. I connected it to his amp and because it was a tight fit dislodged his left phono input, so now I'll also have to fix his phono input asap. Luckily he's a good and understanding friend. My technics when it was connected to his system (and played stereo before the Left input broke) played very low as well. So finally looks like I need sort the cables on my technics and now the phono inputs to both my amp and his which has been dislodged/broken by the cables on the technics. You have all been absolute saviors on this. Thank you so much for the advice!!!!!
