After considerable research & heeding advice from WHF, I purchased a 50" Samsung TV & a Philips HTS8500W home theatre system.

4 years on & the home theatre system has developed a fault - the front left & right speakers are no longer emitting sound. (The central front speaker continues to work). Yes, I have swapped the speakers round & they work in the other positions so it is something else causing the problem.

What is considered the life expectancy of a product of this type? Am I reasonable in feeling that it should last longer & therefore justified in pursuing a cost free repacement or repair - or should I accept that is that & replace the unit with something new.

Any views or advice would be appreciated.

in my experience, modern kit can go on for years, a marantz cd player i had just died after 27 years. a pana dvd recorder after 9. i still have a working techinics mini system that's nearly 10. throw it away and treat yourself to a better system. IMHO, pursuing a cost free solution is a non starter and paying for a repair may be throwing money away, another thing might go wrong soon after.
