Hi Forum,

recently have done a comparison of an

LP 12 + Valhalla against a Rega P 3 /Heed Orbit 1

both with an RB 300 + Benz ACE L

Electronics : Linn 2250/Kairn/Linto

Speaker : ALR Note 7

My friend and me found the LInn supplying more tone, specially the bass was more , but the accuracy or timing was better on the Rega. This refers specially to the bass presentation.

Our dealer says the Rega is limited on tone presentation and therefore sounds more accurate. We doubt this and think a change of the power supply for the LP 12 might change this.

Any opinion ?

regards from Germany

It depends which version of the sound you like, Rega's are a different presentation to the LP12, you could change the wire on the RB300 to something that gives the arm more 'colour', and listen to the P3 walk further away from the LP 12. Then change the resin sub platter on the Rega to a good quality aftermarket one and listen again. The 2 decks have differing sounds, decide which you prefer, and tune the deck to expoit that.

I'd also look at the arm - the RB300, though an excellent arm for the price, is only the tip of the iceberg as far as the Linn goes.
