With respect, I think the problems some have had with this range, and our efforts to get a response from Sony on this and other matters, have been covered at some length already here.

At the risk of being seen going deliberately off-topic AND injecting some humour into this thread, I never had this problem with my P3...granted it's a Rega. And a turntable. Oh.

Clare, I think you may be correct about the pro-Sony stance after explaining but when such a big important review such as this one favors a none available and, in MY opinion, obviously flawed product, it raises suspicions.

I consider your role in the market as very important and I would/will? always seek your advice first, but put yourself into the non-enthusiast who buys your magazine on a whim in WHSmith because he/she has seen the front cover, makes a decision on your say so, then a) can't buy one because they are not available, and b) do buy one and is very dissapointed with the result?

And whoever it was who said 'yawn' on here, do I have to say what I and what everyone else thinks about comments like that?

Very funny!

I think Clare & Andrew should put in some overtime and personally construct some W4500's in order to satisfy demand (and while they're at it test for clouding issues)

I ÿyawned...and I still am...so yes h4ardy, do say...

I went on to give a point of view.ÿ

And my 'yawn' is just as valid as your 'crusade'.

I am very happy with the way this has been aired by WHF both here and in the magazine (read the first line of the review!) and consider their independence has been demonstrated on more than one occasion.

As for non-enthusiasts of the WHSmith variety, I say again, "read the first line of the review..."ÿ

End of.

(Actually, not quite, WHICH? magazine do not mention ANY of the problems raised here. Their only negative, apart from 'a wasteful quick-start standby mode', is that the set has a poor viewing angle.)

And for the benefit of those who haven't yet received their April issue, here is the opening paragraph of the review:

A number of readers have complained on our Forums at www.whathifi.com that they have clouding issues with this, our 2008 Award winner. Clearly any prospective purchaser needs to be aware of this potential pitfall. All we can say, though, is that we have judged this set as we found it, and did not experience any such issues with any set we have received. And, half a year on from bestowing the Award, this is still the 46incher that we'd buy.

We then go on to discuss the clouding issue in more detail, and we also stress in the closing paragraph of the review that the set is being replaced soon

Martin Gman:
matthewpiano:1. The review clearly raises the subject of clouding in the opening lines.

2. What Hi-fi have hosted endless discussions about the issues on this forum, AND created links on online reviews.

3. The W4500 series is being discontinued because its the normal time of year for Sony to launch new sets. The W5500 sets are imminent (we're receiving our first two on Monday in 37" size), but have been launched as a natural replacement. No other reason.

4. This has been discussed over and over again. If you don't like Sony TVs or aren't confident about the W4500 don't buy one. Wait for the new model instead. You'll struggle to find a W4500 now anyway unless its an import because Sony UK have been out of stock for a while.

5. I'm not sure that giving away the results of the Supertest from a new edition which isn't even on general release in the shops yet is particularly good forum etiquette.

matthewpiano how dare you respond to h4rdy like that. What gives you the right to speak for everyone???

h4rdy has made a valid and very relevant post there and needs to be addressed.

I never once indicated that I was speaking for anyone other than myself. All I did was to lay out the facts of the situation. H4rdy has a perfect right to post his thoughts and I certainly don't question that right, but grounding them in proper fact is always useful. WHFS&V have done more than anyone to highlight the issues that SOME buyers have had with the W4500 range sets but there are huge numbers of problem free sets out there, including the ones they reviewed. If products with faults on SOME examples should be removed from review/recommendation no Renault car should ever appear in a motoring magazine - just look at the threads on Parkers forum for that!! Yet they do get good reviews and, believe it or not, there are some very happy drivers out there.

I will AGAIN repeat my advice, given previously: If you have a W4500 (or any TV by any manufacturer) that you are unhappy with for any fault whatsoever, take it up with your retailer/dealer.

Finally, it is very difficult for magazines and manufacturers to predict future availability of a particular model. I notice another magazine has reviewed a Pioneer hi-fi combination this month that seems to be impossible to obtain from any dealer. It happens and, at this time of year when we are on the cusp of new models across the consumer electronics industry it is more likely than ever. I would recommend anyone considering a larger Sony TV now to hang fire for the new models. On the evidence I've seen so far they are a good step forwards and I thinks its an exciting range - probably the best thought out one Sony have had for quite some time.

Crikey - who'd have thought there was a global credit crisis and world economic meltdown around the corner. Seems there is plenty of money around for people to go into a random electronics shop and buy an expensive consumer product who can't be bothered to spend time there to test whether it is the right product for themselves but just rely upon, albeit expert, someone else's opinion. Some should be protected from themselves but that isn't WHF&V's job they're just providing a paid for service trying to help those who are interested to make an informed decision I believe, rather than have hidden agendas or screaming commercialism via special treatment for particular suppliers / advertisers. And rest....

No 'crusade' just an opinion which I have wanted to air and this was the icing on the cake.

No need to be offensive with your 'yawn'.

Its better to have a good constructive discussion, don't you think?

I am glad you are happy with your TV and I suspect others are, but I think it is good to appreciate that some people are very unhappy.

So carry on 'yawning' my fellow AV addict but you are one of few I suspect by issues raised by others here.

Over and out!

Why the 'Really, this time'?

I think you have confused me with somebody else!
