I just got the 42 inch pz85b connected it up to an onkyo 606 and ps3 with ixus hdmi cables. standard def looks fine, ps3 gaming looks great but when i put on a blu-ray ( casino royal and blade runner anniverasary edition) im really disppointed. i expected crisp clean pictures but there seems to be loads of noise and a fuzziness to the picture for example in the scene in the casino when they are playing the game the chairs look like the pixels are almost jumping. Is this a faulty set or normal? im stting 2.5 meters away and wouldnt expect to notice this as pronounced. Some of the images are great tho i have fiddled with all the settings on the tv to try and fix this turning on nr certainly helps but its still not as good as i expected.

Oh and i get the same on BBC HD through my Sky HD

Something's definitely wrong, both Casino Royale and Blade Runner look fantastic on my set through my PS3. Have you turned off all picture processing on the TV and optimised your settings with THX optimiser?

tried with and without processing on. tried with and without ifc on. reckon its a dodgy panel?

what settings should i have it on for the ps3?

havent thxed it yet because i dont have any dvds with thx thingy on it but cant see why that would make a massive difference to picture noise and also it cant be the ps3 because as i said its the same with skyhd. could it be the onkyo?

its 1080p definately i checked that straight away. i did move the tv after i had placed it down the first time but i didnt think it was that sensitive! i'll try direct into the tv see if that makes a difference.

I'll probably get lynched for even suggesting this (

) but worth checking the cable i.e. swapping it with a device that's working okay...

i have cables and one from onkyo to tv, one from ps3 to onkyo one from sky hd to onkyo. all 3 brand new ixus leads ( the good ones) got the problem on both sky hd and the ps3

Okay, could be the one hooking the Onkyo to the TV, but this will show up when you try connecting the PS3 direct into the TV. If connecting direct into the TV works, it's worth changing over the cable so you're using the one which is currently hooking the Onkyo into the TV so this then connects the PS3 up direct to the TV again. In this way, you can rule out whether it's the cable or the Onkyo (or indeed the TV if none of these solutions fixes the problem).

yea its set to through.

Does this sound like something i definately shouldnt be seeing then? im not beng overly sensitive? I have a feeling its more likely a dodgy panel than the onkyo or the lead.

If it's set to through, then it could be a panel problem, or something amiss in the picture processing circuitry. But only could, mind.

Try both sources straight into the TV, and see how that looks (if you haven't already tried that), which should help you eliminate the variables.

if its a problem with the picture processing what does that actually mean? does it mean the tv is faulty?

alan at richer sound in romford just told me that blade runner and casino royal arent great blu-rays and i'd see a better picture using an upscaler he then asked me to do some elimination tests that i will of course do. My bets on the tv tho.

Hmmm... Casino Royale is considered one of the best Blu-Rays at the moment for picture... and Blade Runner ain't no slouch either in my opinion...

The reason I sujested it may be to do with the PS3 settings for BD/DVD playback is because in the OP Dan states that gmaes on the PS3 look mint and the Picture issues only occour during BD playback.

Have you tried altering the settings regarding 24htz? and the other HDMI settings like I think its SUPER WHITE or something like that is RGB set to FULL etc?

I have a Problem with My PS3 (been waiting for over a Month now for SONY to come and swap it!) where on the menu screen with video set to 1080p, I get constant flashes of what is best discribed as WHITE NOISE, but boot up a BD Movie or game and the picture is mint. Now according to SONY this is a fault with the inbuilt scaler so maybe You have a simular problem with your PS3 as according to the bloke I have spoken to at SONY, off the record they have a problem with a batch of 40gb PS3's which has led to a shortage in replacement units hence My Month+ wait for a replacement.

Good pick up, DJ. So I guess the test would be to try the PS3 on another TV if problem persists when hooked up directly. Of course, given the issue is on Sky HD as well, this suggests it's a problem with their Onkyo / cable / TV, but you can't rule out a faulty PS3 and a faulty Sky HD box! Only testing will tell...!

its on full and superwhite and on 24fps tried it both ways. I really dont think its the anything but the tv alan told me that a tv is just a panel thats outputs a picture and its alot to do with the source . thats not true anymore they arent so dumb and if theres a problem with the image processing then it would explain this or if the there is a problem with the pixel thats wouldnt help either.

spoke to richer sounds and they are going to replace it for me. My only worry is maybe its to big? im 2.5 m away from the screen and some standard def content dont look great. Should i get a refund and got for a 40/37 or is 42 fine? i really want to make sure i can enjoy my tv. I watch a mixture of standard def through sky hd and movies through blu-ray/ sky hd. I know skyhd upscales but i could still see artifacts.

Dan - you're never going to get a perfect picture all of the time. I have a Panaconic 37px80 and I sit just over 2m from the screen with sky hd. Some SD channels look rubbish (Setanta for example) while anything HD looks awesome. I get a little judder now and then but otherwise its perfect. Only reason I didnt get the 42" was because it would sit too far in the room and dominate, If I could keep it over 2m away then I would go with the 42".

42" is fine. Do not go any smaller! I have the 42PZ85, sit about 7ft away in a 12ft room - thought it a big set at first but now wish I had a 50" particularly with the 2.40:1 ratio of most blu ray's.

By the way, Casino Royale and Bladerunner are excellent Blu rays in terms of picture quality (played through a Panny BD30 in my case). Good luck with the exchange.
