It seems I have retrieved my 18,000 songs from a "damaged" ext. hard drive, and using a data recovery programme transferred them to another external drive.

However, when I try to consolidate iTunes library not much happens. I've re-set the iTunes preferences to match the new external drive but nothing will play.

If I click on the new drive I can see a number of folders in there. One of which, entitled "Root", seems to contain every song in group order.
How do I match/sync this folder with my iTunes, and enable the playback of these (hopefully) restored files?

Fingers crossed for an answer even I can't mess up.

Thanks for that.

Almost sorted. Songs are all restored and accessible but I seem to have duplicated the import of the entire library. I now have 36,000 songs not 18,000. The facsimile files are unplayable - "file cannot be found". So I must have made a previous error or they are the "original" files from the previous HD.

Other than laboriously clicking on each one manually, is there a more direct method of excising the bogus songs en masse?
