Is your Sony WE5 clouding at the corners?

Although it doesn't seem to make any difference at all when the TV is actually in use - even when generating dark grey's and blacks - when its sat waiting for a signal there are some hints of mist/clouding mostly in the corners.

SEE POST MADE ON 11TH AUGUST A FEW WEEKS LATER - THE CLOUDING IS GETTING WORSE, AND IS ALWAYS VISIBLE!

Does anyone have the same?
Does anyone know if this is just due to the unique backlighting technology?
Has Sony screwed up again?

K

But sadly, this has become a recurring problem on many of Sony's other 2009 Bravia TVs, as we've reported in our tests. And yes, it's due to uneven backlighting.

As long as it does not get worse...I agree.

I can find no issue with the image when there is a signal, even if I try and trip it up with feeds that are most likely to show a problem.
I have only had the TV a month and am V pleased with it...I would not swap it.
The review of the 46incher by WHiFi seems to hold true with the 40" as well - except for the fact I certainly have these clouds when no signal is being passed through, and possibly have them when it is.

I created this topic to see if anyone else out there was experiencing these clouds on the WE range, and also to find out if anyone knew whether it could just be put down to the special backlight the WE range uses and shut the case on whether anyone shoudl be concerned.
Sony seem scared to answer themselves.

I have the 46" version and I'm not seeing it?

What picture settings are you using?

Under what conditions do you see it? - I'll see if I can re-create.

I've just recently purchased the 40w5500 and yes there is back light bleed, mainly in the top right and bottom left corners. I have tried playing with the settings which has reduced it slightly but they are still visible. It is a little frustrating especially when Sony have years of experience producing tv's, you would have thought they would have sorted this problem out by now.

In Cinema mode change your back light to 3, contrast, brightness and colour in the 50's, gamma -1, eco mode off.

what hi fi team can you advise on the best calibration to have ?

Hi ...

The WE uses a completely different panel backlighting technology, so I do not think its useful to compare the w5500 coulding issues with the ones on the WE range.

Hi ..

It doesnt matter what the picture setting are, its always visible if there is no live signal.
Questions are:
Is it just there while the panel is in a limbo state?
If it gets worse will I start seeing it all the time?

Hi Andrew ..

How long has the team used that TV for?
The clouds started apopearing after a few weeks.

Hi Mr. Jelly.

I bought my third TV in as many months on Saturday, the 46we5 and yes, I have clouding in the two top corners. I have already returned a Samsung which had clouding, which was to replace another Samsung I had for ten months before deciding to die on me. Though that one did not seem to have any clouding issues.

Then last week I got the Philips 47pfl8404. Beautiful set- pin sharp and really true-to-life colours, but the picture noise was quite bad. I was debating wether to keep it or not, when that was decided for me when it wouldn't switch on on Saturday morning!

I was informed by Richer Sounds Exeter that the Plymouth branch had a black WE5. I couldn't get through on the phone but decided to risk the 30 mile journey. 'Yes, we do seem to have one in stock-do you want it'? ..MMM OK. Said I. Paid for it and the guy went to get it for me. He came back and said he'd just opened the box to check and it's white! Pooh. Well he said try it and if you can't live with it, bring it back for a full refund, and gave me £55 back. They could special order me a black one but it would cost 'much more'. Fair enough. So I thought I'd give the white one a go.

Anyway, after correctly setting it up and setting the white balance using my Spider Pro, I have to say the picture is fantastic. Maybe not quite as detailed as the Philips (and I miss my Ambilight), but the SD picture is so much better. Unfortunately, once I'd noticed the clouding I can't now take my eyes off it. I even repositioned the set so I'm not looking up to it so much but to no avail. I now have the backlight turned down to 1, but it's still there. Even with the backlight on min. It's not terrible- most of the time you would not notice, but in really dark scenes you can notice it, and once you do, you can't keep your eyes off it. It just ruins what is otherwise a fabulous set.

Having deliberated and tested so many TV's in the last four or five months this is really disheartening. I'm fed up with all the agro I've been through and still haven't really got a satisfactory set!! I don't know whether to take it back or put up with it and hope that I don't notice it so much. But, I mean you wouldn't buy a new car that had wobbly wheels and put up with it just because the salesman says it's the new technology!

Besides that, I still can't decide on the white. It looks cool, and in a darkened room you wouldn't really notice when you're watching a film, but in daylight I can't work out if it's destracting or if i'm just thinking about it and looking at it too much. And if I do return it because of the backlight bleed, I think getting a replacement will be another long and drawn-out affair, and even then a replacement is likely to have the same problem. My only other option now is a Samsung UE series 7 or 8, but i hear it can make things look artificial, plus I think they may have reliability issues, given my previous experience. The new Panasonics are frankly unimpressive from what I've seen.

I'm really depressed about the whole thing. Maybe I should just go back to a CRT!!

How bad is yours, Mr. Jelly? You say you can't even notice on really dark scenes. I'd live with that. Are you going to exchange/ change your set?

have you checked out the samsung b850 plasma ?? its meant to be very good , i dont know if 50inch would be too big for you , but you will have no clouding problems , and apparently its quite a bright plasma , more lcd like in that way , you dont seem to be having much luck with lcds , why not check it out ?

Absolutely right and its extremely noble of you to admit it.

Moving swiftly on, the 2008-2009 Backlight issues from Sony will eventually IMO cost the company dearly. NO company is too big to fail (ala Lehman). It sickens me though that WHF are letting certain 'Sony Center' workers have their bias say and leading the vulnerable public to purchase these 'Faulty' items.Just look at the amount of people on the entire web now complaining about Backlight Bleed.

As you've been away for some time, Martin, you may have failed to notice we changed our house rules so retailers/manufacturers reveal their identity - and therefore any potential bias - in their signature and bios on this site. It's up to other site users to make up their minds on their comments armed with that knowledge - and our opinions on the matter, which are clearly stated.

daveh:I've had a 46W5500 for a month with no bleeding problems.

There's no need for that kind of language!..(Ha, ha)

The OP was asking about the WE5, though. Still not sure wether I will keep mine. There is some clouding but it's now quite minimal and only really noticable in a dark room with very dark scenes. Though, of course, this is precicely how we like to watch films!

Just find it unbelievable that manufacturers haven't fixed this yet.

Does anyone know the precise cause of it? I.e., is it due to gaps in between the display and the backlight or what? Because I would have thought that there might be a simple after market fix for anyone with these faulty (sorry Samsung, Sony et al, but it is a fault) TV's. Or an improvement in manufacturing techniques in the first place!

A few weeks have passed.

The clouding IS getting worse and IS always there - signal or no signal.
Has anyone else suffered the same, and what was Sony's reactions on wanting a replacement unit?
Help, suggestions, and advice welcome.

HI Arepeebee

For the first month I was not able to see the clouding when an image was on the screen. However, it is getting worse now, and as you also noted, in dark scenes it is ever-present, annoying, and unacceptable.

just got my 21 inch crt fixes.because i loved the image.70 euros.didn't spend money buying something expensive that wouldn't last long, gave job to an 82 year old man, and didn't contribute to global warming.Im happy.its gonna be a while for me since im decided to buy a lcd.but I keep up with the new models etc, love to go to the shops.never noticed backlight on a sony.strange...I guess it depends much from the angle you are watching it from.

Hi

Bought a white We5 4 days ago. I needed a matte screen due to the set sitting opposite some big windows so it was either gonna be Philips or Sony. Liked the Philips colours but the motion looked overly processed. Was gonna get a W4000 even though it's a bit 'outdated' as it got good reviews when it came out and didn't seem to have so many clouding issues. However, on the back of rave reviews here, on Trusted Reviews and Digital Versus, all citing the absence of clouding (thought I'd found the Holy Grail of LCD TVs !! ) I took the plunge. Thought I'd been lucky until I played Bioshock last night on the X-box - but then I saw the clouding in top 2 corners and a bit mid-screen. However, it was with all lights turned off and only in the totally dark scenes (backlight on 8). Turned on one small lamp and I didn't notice the problem anymore. In the light of the problems others have had in finding a perfect set I think I'll be keeping mine. Picture quality is great and I 've been amazed at how good the SD content looks - miles better than in the shops. The motion handling also does a good job when watching the football. Agree with Arepeebee re. colour - can't make up my mind either - I do find myself staring at the frame more than normal during the day-but at least it takes my mind off the clouding -lol. But I reckon the white frame obsession is probably just because it's new. Just wonder whether I might as well have bought a W5500 which would have given me almost the same specs and saved a bit of cash.

Hi ..
It got worse, and I can now see it on some normal-darking images....especially as I know its there 🙂
I called in Sony to take a look, but they just quaffed at it and refused to do anything about it.
Have lived with it ever since, but it is begining to bother me again.
Not sure what I can do if Sony themselves don't care
