If I set my computer to decode (or indeed encode, or compress or whatever) it takes as long as it takes. Any errors are removed and it will do it again until its correct. There are no time constraints so every computer in the world (that works as it should) would complete the tasks given to it (Although at varying time frames)

I couldnt care less what the word means. We have an 'ethics' policy at work, but theyre FAR from ethical. Same as lossless doesnt mean the end product will definitely be lossless. The PS3 DOES have a time constraint if it gets it wrong (Which it does) it will sound different as it cant go back and try again

On a separate note, if the HDMI lead is near its limits, the higher bandwidth of uncompressed material could in fact sound WORSE

PS ~ ive asked the same question 3 times now. Whats that all about?

If ur still bored have a look at DTS own website.

http://www.dts.com/DTS_Audio_Formats/DTS-HD_Master_Audio/How_Does_DTS-HD_Work.aspx

or this excerpt from the official HDMI website

Q. What is the difference between decoding Dolby
TrueHD/DTS-HD in the player (i.e. sending over HDMI as decoded PCM) vs.
decoding in the A/V receiver (i.e. sending over HDMI as encoded Dolby
TrueHD/DTS-HD bitstream)?

There is no inherent
difference in quality between Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD being sent over HDMI
as decoded PCM vs. encoded bit stream. All Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD decoders
(whether in the player or the A/V receiver) must be certified to meet
stringent quality requirements. However, consumers should make sure
that their receivers support the number of incoming PCM channels
delivered by their source device (e.g. DVD).

edsib1:

the lack of understanding in these forums is frightening...

the very definition of lossless is that the decoded stream is EXACTLY the same as the encoded stream.

The problem is, that you keep discussing theory whereas we are talking real life experience.

Don't get me wrong, I like to understand how things work too, but if the real life experience do not reflect the theory, there is not much use for it.

Jitter rates............ Getting ALL the encoding from A to B in real time makes a difference to what is processed at the other end.

That is why Bit-streaming the signal gives better throughput.

Simple :)
