I don't think doing away with black altogether is a smart move. I hope they don't go down the same route with the iPad!

They haven't. They've only made it two-tone.

I can't find any good images to have a good look, anyone see any? Cheers.

I guess this is the cheapest reliable Apple phone you can buy then?

Its worth pointing out that the fingerprint id is next to useless as the sole security level.

It has already been fooled by someone just using a photograph of a fingerprint. And unlike a passkey or pattern or whatever else you might've used before you cant simply change your fingerprints

So you still need a passkey as well to be secure - so then whats the point of a fingerprint reader? Its just a PR gimmick.

To be fair, the Chaos Computers Clubs hack was a lot more involved than just using a photograph.

50% of Apple users (according to Apple) don't use any form of security on their iThings, so gimmicky or not, if it gets them into the habit of securing their devices its no bad thing.

I broke in to a mates Android phone, using nothing but sunlight. I angled the phone and could see the greasy streak on the swipe password thingami ;P

On a serious note, Apple have implemented a key code requirement for switching off find my iPhone and reformatting the phone. Even DFU mode wont save you. So, although mugger chap can follow the method above to access your data, they can't do much else (until someone inevitably figures out how to crack that too). I think if you are storing any valuable/vulnerable data on a phone, you are asking for trouble. I don't use a passcode as there is nothing I would miss on my phone other than the phone itself, and its not going to stop someone getting in anyway if they really want to. The biggest use of this thumb scanner is going to be stopping your mates changing your Facebook status inin the pub...

A chap on Twitter summed it up perfectly: If you're honestly worried about someone stealing your iPhone & your fingerprints, you've got problems consumer tech can't solve.

"Not to mention the potential for this feature: if Apple pushes its Bluetooth iBeacons set-up, Apple's take on NFC, we could see secure mobile payments authorised by a press of a finger in a matter of months. "

I particularly like this bit from the whathifi review.

It just shows a spectacular failure of the reviewer to understand the security issues associated with the technology.

So you think you can photograph, print and generate a workable fingerprint faster than I can notice my phone is gone and disable it from any web browser? All to nick a big mac? Its not like you can walk in to a BMW dealership and buy a Z4 with contactless payment.

God i'm suprised you get out of bed in the morning Another Joe, but this might please you, finger print scanners can be cloned be a childs sweet like a gummy bear or wine gum, i have never seen it myself though i have heard on more than one accasion by certain security staff it can be done.

It would be interesting to find out if it can be done on the iPhone 5s

Yep, nicely done though for most of us it would still be hassle to actually achieve what CCC did ,

though still bare in mind from there you have only unlocked the phone, you still cannot reset or turn of find my iPhone without the codes ( but i guess that comes next )

Though i will not be buying an iPhone 5s i do feel the finger print scanner is one way forward and i'm pretty sure it will be improved on the iPhone 6

Its one step at a time

I'm not an Apple fan boy, I don't even own an iPhone but I cannot help thinking some folks are missing the point. Most security measures can be bypassed if you give it enough time, thought and effort. If one actually thinks about the level at which we're talking here, which is basically Joe Public and their smartphone, surely the finger scanning functionality is more secure than a number code or finger swipe gesture. As stated earlier, you can easilly see the swipe gesture people use by tilting to the light and following the grease stain or you could blag a number code by looking over someones shoulder in the shopping queue. Copying someone's finger is an altogether more complicated process.

It may not be perfect but personally I applaud Apple for giving it a bash

Yep, that is why Apple are paying people to try and hack them.

You need to take a deep breath and think about things alittle more, any device left in the right hands for a length of time can be cracked, most people like you and i maybe tech savy and have pulled a lot of computers apart or other electrical device for repair but it would of taken us a lot longer for us to figure a way of cracking the finger print scanner.

Anyway even if you got you hands on an iPhone 5s now simonlewis and tried to repeat CCC knowledge it would still take days to achieve what you needed to do to just get passed the finger print scanner, and then what?

You still need the codes to make the phone yours
