iPhone 5S and iPad 5 - Anyone Buying?

I'm not sure if Apple has priced it right. The only competition for the 5C as far as I can see, is the 5S!! It'll only eat into the sales of its premium sibling. The initial sales figures will no doubt appear phenomenal as compared to iPhone 5, with simultaneous launch in China.

The S:
So they took the fingerprint scanner feature from a Motorola Atrix, the burst camera mode from the HTC One, and upgraded the cpu/gpu.

Display did not get a boost and is still not even 720p and an increase in price over previous model.
It is still a decent enough upgrade over the old model though - so people will buy it.

The C:
Oh dear
12month old tech in a plastic case (that looks like its aimed at 6 year olds) and yet costs more than an HTC One. Not exactly innovation, and I cant see who would buy it except real diehard Apple fans.

China loves big brands & prefers Apple to HTC or even Samsung. If I'm not mistaken, the biggest Boxing day sales come from Chinese tourists. The phones will sell well, no doubt.

What are your thoughts on 64-bit?

Motorola Atrix's fingerprint reader was very buggy & more of a hassle than use. If Apple manages to overcome the bugs, I won't moan about Apple lifting tech from Motorola. Motorola & rest of the Android clan had 2 years since the Atrix to perfect the technology but nobody bothered!

didnt the iPaq have fingerprint readers aaaaaaaages ago? Hardly think Motorola should get the credit for it.

A bit of googling reveals something very interesting. AuthenTech originally holds patents for the fingerprint technology, and Motorola was its client who incorporated it into the Atrix. Apple bought AuthenTech last year, so now Apple holds the patents! http://thenextweb.com/apple/2012/08/16/the-real-reason-apple-acquired-authentec-because-needed-new-technology-quickly-products/

Having a 64bit chip looks like a pure marketing move to me:- to the uneducated 64bits is twice as good as 32bits isnt it ?

The only real advantage of 64bit is memory addressing - letting a process access >4GB ram. But whats the point of that in a phone?

Existing 32bit apps would have to be recompiled to the new architecture ( ARMv8 )to show any benefit, and even then its doubtful you'd see significant gains. Compare a 64bit Linux distro to a 32bit distro and the performance gain is typically less than 5% if at all.

2 things surprised me, Apple hasnt moved to a quad-core like the Snapdragon 600/800, and also that the screen resolution didnt increase to 720p or preferably 1080p.

Anyone buying then, so we can get some pictures and reports? Looks like the 5C might be popular despite its large price tag!

I might upgrade in November next year when the contract on my 5 ends. There might even be a 6 by then.

No hurry.

It looks like the 5C is very much the same as the 5 anyway but with a thicker design.

I have only just released that Apple have done away with the black design!

http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/compare/

I wonder why that was?

I wouldn't buy another colour other than black.

All the models are described by their 2nd tone (silver, gold & space grey) instead of the base colour which is black or white.

I will have to check it out. I am very much into my black.

I don't think doing away with black altogether is a smart move. I hope they don't go down the same route with the iPad!

Maybe it fairs scratches better? Mine still looks pretty slick, but a friend of mine had his in a fixed case for four months. Took it out expecting it to be pristine and it was wrecked! Grit gets in and the small amount of movement in the case grinds away at the anodisation. I put mine in a case for the first week, then didn't bother after that. Heed this warning about fixed cases though, they do more harm than good!

I don't have mine in a case either, I like to keep it small for my pocket.
