Morning all,

I'm waiting for the Jan sales, but can anyone offer their views on the best TV 40" - 46" LCD or Plasma to watch Sport (Football, Rugby and Cricket) and for gaming (Xbox 360 - MW2)?

I'm thinking of the £1200 region but if the TV warrants it I'll up the spend!!

At the moment everything will be viewed through Sky + but with wife approval an upgrade to Sky HD may be on the cards (I'll sell it on the nice blue lighting)

Your opinions will be much appreciated!

Doug.

I've got the panasonic v10. I can't comment on the performance of the xbox on other tvs because I haven't tried it on them, but bear in mind that this panasonic (and presumably the others also) don't accept 1080p from the component cable, so if you have an old xbox without hdmi, it won't output at full hd. (or something along those lines)

Thanks lads.... I'll have a look through the Pany stuff when I get home tonight.. Yes all of the connections will be either HDMI (I've had to but a new Xbox as the last one had the ring of death) and Scart Leadds from Sky +

What about the Sony's / Philips / Samsungs out there are they any good for fast moving sport and low input lag times?

As a general rule of thumb plasma is better for what your looking for.

No doubt sony, phillips and samsung make great TVs, but the LCDs cater for a slightly different market

I have the Phillips, but watch a lot of TV during day time hours, hate sports (please don't hurt me) and was never looking for a tv over 42 inches, and I like LCD brightness more than the au naturale of plasma, though all of this is relative to how much you wanna spend of course.

I would go for plasma for your set of needs.

From all the information I've been reading here and on other websites, it always gives the impression that LCD is the way forward, or am I falling into the marketing trap??

Naaa, neither technology is "better" than the other, well that's the way I see it. Both are on pretty level pegging if you ask me, just depends on your needs.

I see it as:

LCD: Good for: HD movies, bright viewing environments, very sharp picture, vibrant colours, lots of choice out there.

Plasms: Good for: HD movies, Darker viewing rooms, Very good blacks levels, natural colour pallet, low imput lag for gaming and good motion handling for sports, not to mention better viewing angles...

Why did i buy an LCD again??? Haha

To be honest, these are just generalizations for what each tech is known to be good at. Top LCDs and Plasmas are very close in almost every aspect, not that much seperates a top plasma from a top LCD, well that's what I gathered from my viewing experiences.

I suggest you do a search for any televisions that interest you, as there is at least one site that specifically tests for gaming lag (which can be a problem for online play, particularly MW2).

I can recommend the 42" G10 for sports and gaming. I find it an excellent TV for both, just don't buy into the 600hz sub field drive marketing nonsense (it genuinely doesn't make any difference, other than very occassionally making motion look slightly strange and unnatural).

Leave the 'intelligent frame creation' processing technology off, however, and it performs extremely well with motion -- unless you're one of those people who are highly sensitive to phosphor trails... Audition one, and assuming you don't have this problem, the G10 should suit your requirements very well...
