Jazz recomendation please (strictly no Ella as I was bought up listening to her voice on my mum's records...poor me!)

What sort? For piano Jazz, I would suggest Dave Brubeck or Bill Evans, for Trumpet, has to be Miles Davis...

For modern stuff, someone else may be able to chip in...

Good to have you back TM - wheredidyago?

Heres a few suggestions:

Time Out by Dave Brubeck

Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock

In The Wee Small Hours by Frank Sinatra

Basie at Birdland by Count Basie

Cheers guys

(I would class Frank as a swinger rather than Jazz though)

I like Ernest Ranglin so anything along those line would be great.

All the familiar names.

Wayne Shorter.

Live at Bradley's II: Kenny Barron and SFJC 2 have beautiful covers of Monk and Coltrane standards respectively, along with original numbers.

ECM's 'rarum' series, albums of artists' selections from their music, is worth a look.

If you fancy a bit of jazzy guitar try this -

`Caravanserai` by Santana.

You can buy this in a slip case with two other Santana albums `Welcome` and `Love Devotion Surrender` from Amazon for just £7.98!

I`ll second funkbrother`s recommendation. Wether you class this album as jazzy or not it`s an essential album. HIGHLY recommended. Great late night listening.

Just a few you may be interested in:

I saw Oscar Peterson at the Royal Albert Hall 3 years ago and even after suffering a stroke he hit a home run...a great evening it was..I think most modern Jazz of today is rubbish and much prefer listening to the old greats than wanna bees like Jamie McCullum...he's absolutely awful...Hits the piano more than he hits its keys

...If you want to try some 70's style "modern" stuff howazabout some Weather Report? ..My fave is probably the excellent "Mysterious Traveller" but many fans rate "Heavy Weather" + "Black Market" - the albums that introduced the amazing bass player Jaco Pastorious to music fans.

...If you want some ultra fast, loud, virtuoso fusion try and hear Mahavishu Orchestra's stunning "Birds Of Fire" - I guess you'll love it or......

...More traditionally John Coltrane's "Blue Trane" is wonderful.

Just sifting through some of mmy old LP's. Came across "Life on the Wire by Morissey Mullen, I quite like my Jazz with a funky flavour.

I quite like the Jazz Funk sounds from bands like Incognito, and the Brand New Heavies.

I think they're generally regarded more as jazz-funk/fusion but I can't stop listening to Medeski, Martin and Wood, their early stuff is all acoustic with Medeski on piano but after three albums he brought in a Hammond and various other keyboard based instruments. Their best of Blue Note album might be a good place to start (it's available on double vinyl as well with a few extra tracks over the cd, if that floats your boat), although it's the pre-Blue note albums that feature the piano more. I don't know how easy they are to get hold of these days though.

Bill Evans 'Explorations'

Coltrane

Miles Davies

All above mentioned already but check out Charles Mingus 'ah um' ,I can't recommend it enough.Enjoy.

I've been getting to know my jazz collection again after a recent system upgrade and I'm in jazz heaven at the moment. Here's a few of the highlights so far:

Porgy & Bess / E.S.P. / In A Silent Way / Filles De Kiliminjaro / Bitches Brew - Miles Davis

The Soothsayer / Juju / Adam's Apple / Odyssey Of Iska - Wayne Shorter

Bright Size Life - Pat Metheney

Journey To The One - Pharoah Sanders

Head Hunters / The Prisoner / Fat Albert Rotunda - Herbbie Hancock

Live At The Lighthouse - Grant Green killer live album - pure funk with amazing performances

Lanquidity / Sleeping Beauty - Sun Ra

Search For A New Land - Lee Morgan

Leaving This Planet - Charles Earland

Nyah-Rock ( a best of ) - Cymande

On a slightly different tack

His California Album - Bobby Blue Bland

(OH) Ohio - Lambchop

I know these last two aren't jazz but they are tremendous album none the less.

Absolute steal for £7.98.

Note: Love Devotion Surrender is a Devadip Carlos Santana solo album with John McLaughlin and features some heavy but extrordinary psych/fusion guitar playing along the lines of the early Mahavishnu Orchestra not everyones cup of tea but one of my all-time faves tho'.

Nice long list of recommendations there Spacey. I`m glad Thaiman started this thread because if there`s one genre that needs adding to in my collection it`s jazz. There are so many types of jazz that it`s a bit of a minefield and other peoples recommendations can be very useful.

Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Herbie Hancock.

PLEASE add Stephane Grapelli and Django Reinhardt's incredible, wonderful recordings to your list as well. Fabulous stuff.

Just listening to 'Night Train' by The Oscar Peterson Trio now. A fabulous album with Peterson's wonderful musicianship on full show. A very sensitive and creative pianist for whom I have the utmost respect and admiration.

Excellent baseline selection

I'd add Bix Beiderbecke and Stan Getz into the mix It's hard to find good recordings of either though.

You might also try Gene Harris

If you get fed up listening to Frank then you could also try Diana Krall

Ah,my namesakes "The FunkBrothers"...check out some of those amazing basslines by the great James Jamerson!
