Oh it goes from bad to worse - Missus was still in bed so I thought I'd at least try to get an initial reading off the plasma to see what it measures like as standard. Unplugged the PS3 from the man room, bit of a hassle due to it being on top of a bookcase, neatly wired into the projector... Get it in the living room, wire it up, no picture - ah yes, it's set for component and I'm not lifting the TV off the wall myself to try and access those inputs... Back on the projector, having made enough noise to wake the other half upstairs and knocking my projector all out of alignment in the process, only to realise the PS3 is a very irritating device - I want to switch to HDMI, but when I do so it does that lovely check the blank screen process, which of course I can't see, so don't know what to press, so can't alter it. What if you only had say a component source (like the projector I have), how would you change it from the initial HDMI settings? One of those mornings... (oh, and I wanted the PS3 to run patterns, as I have a HD disk, I know I have to use the laptop software on the Eye One

Max, if it helps I'm sure my black levels have actually improved over time - it's like the pro calibrator I quoted the pics from said, in direct comparison to his G20, yes the G20 had deeper blacks, but the 350 had better motion handling, litte posterisation/banding and better colours with more "pop". He classed them as even but each having benefits depending on the material, I hate poor motion handling so that swayed it for me

I'd stick to just calibrating the TV, max - otherwise you might do yourself a mischief.

the black levels are not too bad at all imo jim, id say just on a par with my old g10, i can quite happily live with them, i agree the motion handling is very good, ive watched quite a few different things now, movies, football, etc and havnt seen one motion issue..

i found the default cinema setting to be very nice, as well as the settings you posted for 6th, hopefully i may have some more settings to try before the week is out

now, im going to watch alonso being overtaken by button at the start of the grand prix

stu31:Is it the eye one display lt or display 2 ?On amazon the product descriptions mention calibrating lcd, laptop and crt screens but no mention of plasmas ??Am i looking at the wrong one ?

Both the same sensor, the display 2 has some extra photography software which you may or may not want. There is a pro sensor but you're looking at serious money, the LT is fine
emotion-1.gif
Not had the chance to calibrate the screen yet - "er indoors" usually goes to see the parents at some point over the weekend but she's not shifting, seems I'll have to wait for the opportunity
emotion-2.gif

Thanks for that James I wasn't too sure as the amazon product description didn't mention plasma screens .... then I read the link DJKRIME posted which I should of done in the first place, DO'H !!
Just gotta put another 100 hours on my panel now.

Lovely i get to buy another AV toy !!
Cheapest i've found online so far is £88 delivered, can anyone beat that ?

i tried some settings earlier that i got from the web, for the pk990, and they look very good, id swear the black levels are deeper even though i didnt change the gamma. this lg is definately a tv that benefits from a good tweaking
emotion-1.gif
.

ill still calibrate it properly, once i get a few hundred hours on it, and if i can do it, i feel there may be a question or 300 needed answering first though

Max if you read the instructions on the link I gave you then you should be OK but the colorHCFR software doesn't give you any guidance unlike calMAN but then it is free compared to a yearly feefor calMAN. you will have to set a evening aside for your first atempt as it's quite time consuming with all the reading and clicking and going back and forth from one test patern to another but fully worth it in the end.

Oh you do realise that it's not just the greyscale that you have to calibrate dont you? there is also the lumance,gamma......

My advice is to print of the instructions and have a read through well before you start tinkering with the TV as that way you have a rough idea what your aiming to do before hand as from my experiance it made that actual calibration easier and quicker. I would offer to come and help you but the Emerald isle is just a bit too far for to get there andback in a evening lol.

The differance between calibrating using a sensor and simple THX paterns is simply quite staggering as IMHO using THX paterns is not calibration and can actually make your TVs picture worse!

DVE disk delivered today and its region A so its gotta go back, I was hoping to have a go tomorrow as im stuck in.
I've started reading through the link you posted and it recommends using the DVE disk for the 0 - 100 IRE greyscale window patterns does anyone know where i can download and burn these to a disk as i'm not too sure what im looking for ?

cheers

I can't post a link on here but if you Google "AVSHD" you should find what you're looking for...

I've been pretty busy the last week or so - seems we've got 4 new speakers all at once on the horizon, like buses! But when I get some time I'll start a thread about calibration and put up as many beginners tips as I can think of, I've learnt a lot through trial and error (and asking more experienced people!) in the last few weeks. I'll nail down a final 2-point and 20-point calibration now I know what I'm doing and try to get some pics highlighting the differences and benefits over the standard settings.

Great stuff thanks 2-point 20-point its sounding complicated already !! oh and if you need to test any new range of speakers in a "home" environment let me know, ta !
